Ian McKellen Reveals Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’s Story & Sequel Plans

As a die-hard fan of the Lord of the Rings series who has grown up with these enchanting stories, I am beyond thrilled to hear about the upcoming projects set in Middle Earth! The prospect of two new films focusing on Gollum, and Sir Ian McKellen reprising his iconic role as Gandalf, is simply music to my ears.

The “Lord of the Rings” movie series is one of only a handful of film franchises that have managed to remain relevant over time, and now, with news about additional projects set within the same world, fan enthusiasm has grown even stronger. Recently, Sir Ian McKellen, who played Gandalf in all six previous films, shared details regarding “Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” and plans for a sequel.

Sir Ian McKellen provides The Hunt for Gollum’s script and sequel update

Ian McKellen hinted in a recent interview that there are plans for two movies based on The Hunt for Gollum from The Lord of the Rings series. During an appearance on This Morning, he mentioned, “I’ve been told it’s two films, but I shouldn’t be saying this. I haven’t read the script yet, I don’t know when they will start production, and I don’t even know where they will film it.

Earlier this month, McKellen said that he had been approached to reprise his role as Gandalf in the Gollum-centric project. He elaborated on the subject while speaking to This Morning’s Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley.

He shared that someone contacted him about upcoming films focusing primarily on Gollum, with Andy Serkis, who played Gollum, set to direct. A script is expected to arrive in the coming year, after which he’ll decide if he wants to participate again in the project.

Speaking further, the actor portraying the Critic character expressed, “First and foremost, I’d be thrilled to return to New Zealand for another filming. Secondly, it’s not something I enjoy contemplating, but I don’t want anyone else taking on the role of Gandalf.

2026 seems to be the year I’ll finally get to see the first movie in this epic series I’ve been following. The legendary Peter Jackson, who directed all the previous films, will be at the helm for this new project. Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh, the brilliant minds behind the scripts of the earlier movies, are teaming up with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou to craft the screenplay for this upcoming adventure. Can’t wait!
