As a dedicated follower and admirer of SP Balasubrahmanyam’s timeless music, I wholeheartedly respect and support his son, SP Charan’s decision to prevent the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to replicate his father’s voice in songs and music albums. The emotional depth and soulful essence that emanated from SPB’s voice cannot be replicated by technology, no matter how advanced it may become.
The incomparable impact SP Balasubrahmanyam had on the Indian music industry endures as a legendary symbol today. Although he is no longer with us, his influence continues to thrive. Most recently, SP Charan, his son, expressed that he will not permit the employment of artificial intelligence (AI) to mimic his father’s voice in songs and albums.
In a conversation with Vikatan, SP Charan shared that numerous composers have asked for permission to employ his father’s voice, which has been created using artificial intelligence. The artist stated that he has firmly declined all such proposals, as he feels that his father was a legend who should forever remain in his original position.
SP Charan stated, “I’ve been asked by numerous individuals seeking permission to utilize my father’s voice through AI technology for their music projects. However, my family and I firmly decline. We don’t want his voice to be featured in just anyone’s songs, even if it’s a renowned or thoughtful music director. He’s irreplaceable, and we prefer he remains as is.
Subsequently, SPB’s son criticized the creators of Rajinikanth’s movie Vettaiyan, as they repurposed the song Manasilaayo originally sung by Malaysia Vasudevan with the help of AI, and incorporated it into their latest production.
SP Charan firmly criticized this action, expressing that while the modern version of the legendary singer’s hit was artificially recreated with AI technology, it fails to capture the genuine feeling, soul, and unique tone of the authentic voice.
He explained, “It’s not possible for you to recreate those songs. While you might be able to mimic the voice, you can’t reproduce the emotional impact those songs have today.
Originally, the song “Manasilaayo” from the film “Vettaiyan” was sung by Malaysia Vasudevan about 27 years ago. More recently, composer Anirudh Ravichander remade it using AI technology.
The track swiftly gained popularity due to Rajinikanth’s electrifying dance moves and energetic performance perfectly complementing the upbeat tune. Notably, Anirudh graced the song with his presence, dancing alongside the superstar.
For the unversed, SP Balasubrahmanyam passed away at the age of 74 in September 2020.
