As a cinephile with a penchant for groundbreaking cinema and a soft spot for directors who dare to tread where few have gone before, I can hardly contain my excitement at the prospect of Jane Schoenbrun’s next masterpiece, “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma.
At a recent question-and-answer session, Jane Schoenbrun, the acclaimed director of I Saw the TV Glow (2024), hinted at what lies ahead in her upcoming film, using two distinct comparisons that pique our curiosity.
What did Jane Schoenbrun say about her next movie?
Speaking during a Q&A session at a showing of I Saw the TV Glow (via film critic Siddhant Adlakha on X), Schoenbrun said that her next movie, titled Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, is in the works. She also described the film as “Portrait of a Lady on Fire set in a Friday the 13th sequel.”
In her recent work, Schoenbrun only briefly touched upon the storyline of the film, but in an earlier conversation with FilmMaker Magazine, she mentioned that the movie will primarily focus on the subject of sexuality, particularly exploring the experience of learning about sex after undergoing a gender transition.
In simpler terms, Schoenbrun shared that their upcoming movie revolves around the topic of sexuality and learning to appreciate it after transitioning. Previously, they weren’t asexual but having fulfilling sex while still in the wrong body was unattainable for them. The first two films explore the theme of disconnect or detachment as a coping mechanism.
In an article for The New Yorker, the film is described as paying tribute to and criticizing the horror genre of serial killers, suggesting that it could be a traditional slasher movie. Earlier this year, Schoenbrun’s I Saw the TV Glow was released by A24 and was both praised by critics and successful at the box office, earning $5.3 million in ticket sales.
