I Know What You Did Last Summer: Why Were Lola Tung & Nicholas Alexander Chavez Cut From Sequel?

As a passionate admirer eagerly anticipating the arrival of The Summer I Turned Pretty’s Lola Tung and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story’s Nicholas Alexander Chavez in the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel, I must share some surprising news. Contrary to initial expectations, these two talented actors will not be featured in the final version of the movie. Although they filmed scenes for this highly anticipated slasher flick, their roles were unfortunately eliminated during the editing phase. Intrigued by this unexpected turn of events, I can’t help but wonder what transpired behind the scenes.

Why were Lola Tung and Nicholas Alexander Chavez cut from I Know What You Did Last Summer?

According to director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the opening scene of the movie was initially intended to feature Tung and Chavez.

In the movie, although the performances by Lola and Nicholas were highly commended as “fantastic,” Robinson pointed out that the particular scene didn’t work well in the final cut of the film. According to Robinson, it had no connection with Lola and Nicholas, both of whom delivered excellent performances. However, in the broader context of the movie, the scene simply did not align with the overall narrative.

She pointed out that although the particular scene fit nicely on its own, it ended up affecting the flow and mood of the entire movie when everything was put together. In essence, she characterized it as one of those challenging, artistic choices directors often have to make in filmmaking.

Even though they were both parted following a mutual choice, sources claim that both actors handled it with admirable grace. Robinson, who is involved with the project, praised their professionalism and insight, describing them as “sweet” and “lovely.” Interestingly, she hinted at the possibility of Lola Tung and Nicholas Alexander Chavez reappearing in future installments of I Know What You Did Last Summer, suggesting a sequel might be on the horizon.
