As a hardcore gamer and film enthusiast with a soft spot for thriller movies, I’m beyond excited about the upcoming reboot of “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” The original 1997 movie was a staple in my teenage years, and I still remember staying up late to watch it on VHS (yes, I’m that old!). So, when I heard that Sony Pictures was bringing this classic back to life with an impressive cast, I couldn’t contain my excitement.
Sony Pictures has announced the casting for the remake of “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” Camila Mendes and four other actors have been chosen to star in this notable production.
As a long-time fan of the original film, I’m thrilled to learn that Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is at the helm of the reboot, having co-written the screenplay with Sam Lansky. Her involvement adds an exciting layer of anticipation, given her impressive resume in both writing and directing. Leah McKendrick’s initial script credit further bolsters my confidence in this project. With Neal Moritz on board as producer, it feels like we’re in capable hands, bringing the beloved story to life once more.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer film is drawing inspiration from the successful 2022 Scream reboot. This innovative approach combines legacy characters with new faces, revitalizing the slasher franchise. Previously, there were discussions about Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. returning to their roles from the initial films. However, their participation remains uncertain at this point.
Who is in the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot cast?
Mendes gained recognition for her seven-season portrayal of Veronica Lodge on Riverdale, followed by leading roles in recent romantic comedies Muisca and Upgraded, both streaming on Prime Video. Prior to this, Mendes appeared as a supporting character in the time-loop romance Palm Springs and collaborated with Robinson as the main character in the teen drama film Do Revenge.
Mendes collaborates with Madelyn Cline from Outer Banks in the prospective lead roles, while Sarah Pidgeon, a Tony Award nominee, and Tyriq Withers, known for his Atlanta Season 3 episode and six installments of Tell Me Lies on Hulu, are also part of the announced cast. Additionally, Jonah Hauer-King, who brought Prince Eric to life in Disney’s live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, joins the team.
The original I Know What You Last Summer was released in 1997 by Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson and director Jim Gillespie. With a cast including Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe, it grossed $72 million at the box office and led to a 1998 sequel. There was also a 2006 follow-up, which was not theatrical and did not include any former cast members. In 2021, Prime Video released a television adaptation of the I Know What You Did Last Summer book, though it was canceled after one season.
