‘I have to marry a Badaga’: When Sai Pallavi opened up about family traditions she needs to follow for her marriage

As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for cultural nuances, I find Sai Pallavi‘s perspective on tradition and personal choices particularly intriguing. Her upbringing within the vibrant Badaga community has shaped her worldview, yet she demonstrates an open-mindedness that is both refreshing and inspiring.

Sai Pallavi often makes news due to speculation about her private life, including rumors of relationships, potential partners, and supposed wedding plans. Despite generally keeping quiet about these topics, she has openly shared her thoughts on marriage at times.

In an interview with The News Minute back in 2020, Sai Pallavi discussed some traditional customs her family expects her to adhere to regarding marriage, as she is a member of the Badaga community, residing in Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiris district. The Badagas are recognized for their rich culture and distinctive traditions that set them apart.

Growing up, I was consistently instilled with the belief that I should wed a fellow member of my Badaga community, just like Sai Pallavi shared.

Sai mentioned that some marriages between different communities have taken place within her family, but the majority of these unions reside outside their village. In fact, she also discussed her own parents, who reside in Coimbatore and therefore are not influenced by local opinions regarding their inter-community marriage.

She mentioned that as she gets older, it’s been suggested that she should marry a member of the Badaga community. While many people have opted to marry outside their community, they often do not reside in the village of Kotagiri. Given her parents live in Coimbatore, they are less influenced by societal expectations and pressure about what others might think.

Sai Pallavi disclosed the outcomes when a member of the Badaga community gets married to an individual from another tribe.

She pointed out that partners who choose inter-community marriages often face exclusion, as members of their original villages may stop inviting them to shared events such as weddings, funerals, and social gatherings.

As the conversation neared its end, Sai Pallavi reflected back on a heartfelt talk she had with her father regarding this matter. She pointed out that her father was unaware and preferred she didn’t defy community norms. The actress recollected discussing with her parents how such traditional practices made her uncomfortable.

In her own words, “My father expressed a belief that one should marry within our community because it’s cultural, and he suggested this occurs everywhere. I responded by saying, regardless of culture or any other reason, you can’t force a child to make decisions based on your desires. I found his suggestion troubling.

In terms of her professional endeavors, actress Sai Pallavi will soon appear in the film “Ramayana,” directed by Nitesh Tiwari and featuring Ranbir Kapoor as co-star. Additionally, she is involved with the Tamil biographical movie “Amaran,” where she shares the screen with Sivakarthikeyan.
