I Am Your Beast review: Speedy spy thriller

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I must say, Strange Scaffold has outdone themselves with “I Am Your Beast“. This game takes me back to the classic action films of yore, but with a modern twist that keeps it fresh and exciting. The storyline, reminiscent of the Bourne series, had me hooked from the get-go, and the soundtrack by RJ Lake was the perfect accompaniment to the thrilling chase scenes.

Using “I Am Your Beast”, Strange Scaffold captures the essence of timeless action movies. This tale of vengeance sets up a combat and movement system that makes you feel like an indomitable force of nature. Once more, this studio provides an exceptional, one-of-a-kind gaming experience.

Going rogue

The Thriller “I Am Your Beast” focuses on Alphonse Harding, a former special agent who has retired, yet finds himself drawn back into one final mission. As he navigates the vast North American wilderness, he encounters clandestine operatives determined to apprehend him. However, Harding is no ordinary man and gives his pursuers quite a challenge.

I greatly appreciate how the game, I Am Your Beast, gradually unveils its narrative as you progress through the campaign. At first, you know minimal details about Agent Harding or those attempting to assassinate him. Scattered exchanges during downtime with your superior and other characters deliver information bit by bit, much like a dripping faucet for the player. This pacing seemed perfectly suited to espionage thrillers in the vein of the Bourne series.

The tale becomes more gripping with a rhythmic soundtrack created by RJ Lake, who has contributed to other works under the Strange Scaffold banner.

This game, affectionately titled “I Am Your Beast,” playfully critiques the military-industrial complex and the tropes often found within its genre. Yet, even with its somber undertone, I found myself chuckling frequently during my gaming experience.

One man army

In simple terms, “I Am Your Beast” offers an extraordinary power experience through its action-packed combat and level design. Each level serves as a mini playground, brimming with weapons, dangers, and adversaries that can be defeated in numerous, inventive methods. Give the gamepad to 10 distinct players on the same stage, and you’ll likely find each one completing it in their unique way.

Previously, I highlighted Harding’s extraordinary skills in battle, and they truly stand out. He moves through trees effortlessly, much like a monkey, and leaps impressive distances, akin to The Incredible Hulk. All projectiles serve as weapons for taking down or eliminating adversaries. One of the things I enjoyed most was firing a barrage of enemies with a gun, then, once I ran out of ammo, using it as a makeshift missile and hurling it at an enemy’s head. It gave me the same sense of fulfillment I experienced while playing Superhot. The levels are strategically crafted to allow you to exploit your environment, such as setting up traps or detonating explosive barrels.

At the conclusion of each stage, your performance is evaluated based on aspects like enemies defeated and completion time. This introduces an element of speed running, as I rarely felt content after completing a stage for the first time. I found myself going back to find the most efficient path, eliminating enemies swiftly and moving through the level with maximum efficiency.

In I Am Your Beast, each stage presents a distinct test tailored for avid completists. An early-game stage required me to finish it nonviolently, a challenge that turned out to be harder than anticipated.

Playing “I Am Your Beast” is ideal for brief gaming sessions due to its cleverly designed levels. Whether you’re diving into a few rounds on your Steam Deck or striving to top your own score on a level during downtime before playing with friends, the game’s structure allows for seamless entry and exit without compromising progress.

One hang-up I had was with the way you transition between levels. When you clear a level, there is no option to immediately start the next one, only to replay the current level again. It was tedious having to back out and manually select the next cutscene so that I could play the following level. This feels like the result of the emphasis on speedrunning, as players are encouraged to perfect levels. I appreciated this aspect but would have enjoyed some other design philosophies mixed in there.
