Could you please share with me a brief summary about ROUGH—DRAFT®? This brand specializes in crafting outdoor apparel, bridging the gap between urban landscapes and nature’s beauty.
The Five Ws
Who is ROUGH—DRAFT® for?
People who appreciate and are affected by nature in various ways, not only hikers or campers. This could include those who enjoy strolling around their neighborhood, taking a scenic route to work, or simply stepping outside. It’s for anyone who finds a connection with the great outdoors in their unique manner.
What is ROUGH—DRAFT®’s main message?
Connecting with nature in a way that feels authentic to you is our aim. We strive to make our apparel comfortable and suitable for daily use, be it urban settings, leisurely weekends, or any place in between. Each item draws inspiration from natural elements or outdoor gear we’ve encountered throughout the years, but we reimagine them with a broader focus on everyday style.
When was ROUGH—DRAFT® launched?
Officially, September 2022. It’s been a blur since.
Why was ROUGH—DRAFT® created?
For the first time in my life, I resided within the breathtaking Yosemite National Park, a true mountainous adventure for me, being a Detroit native. This was my debut journey westward, and let me tell you, it was an enlightening experience. Inspired by this transformative moment, I desired to convey these feelings, and writing about it seemed the most natural way. My aspiration was that others who share a love for exploration would resonate with it, particularly those who resemble my ethnicity.
Where are people wearing ROUGH—DRAFT® gear?
Currently, our primary market lies in New York City. However, we aim to boost our impact on the West Coast, particularly in the Pacific Northwest, starting from our Fall-Winter 2025 collection. This area played a significant role in shaping the roots of our brand.
About the Brand
Where did the inspiration for the brand come from, and how was the name chosen?
My time spent in Yosemite served as the spark for my ideas, shifting my viewpoint and inspiring me to materialize this into something tangible. The name ROUGH—DRAFT® originates from the creative journey itself, where all concepts begin as a rough idea or draft. This seemed appropriate for a brand that thrives on exploration and continuous improvement.
How does the brand’s name inform the creation of its goods and its way of thinking?
As a gamer, I’ve come to realize that it’s not just about reaching the final level, but also the thrill of the gameplay – the challenges, the mistakes, and the improvements along the way. Just like exploring new worlds, designing or discovering something new is an ongoing process that demands constant iteration. That’s the very mindset we adopt when crafting our thoughtful, purposeful clothing pieces. Each item we create mirrors the journey we’ve been on.
What does it mean that ROUGH—DRAFT®’s mission includes ‘serving the space between?'” or “Can you explain what ‘serving the space between’ in ROUGH—DRAFT®’s mission statement means?” Both versions convey the same meaning, but the first one uses a more conversational tone.
The design of our logo incorporates a dash, embodying the voyage itself – encompassing setbacks, victories, and the passage of time that culminate in our ultimate creation. This symbol additionally signifies harmony between urban existence and nature, serving as a metaphorical bridge linking these contrasting environments together.
Is the brand characterized by a concept of continuous advancement – continually refining, adjusting, and learning along the way; always striving for improvement but never aiming for perfection? Could you elaborate on this? Do you think a brand can ever truly reach completion, or is it essentially an ongoing process of evolution?
As a gamer, I pour my heart into every detail and stitch, knowing that each one matters significantly. It might take me anywhere from two to five attempts to get it exactly how I want it. Even when I feel like I’ve reached the finish line, there’s always another idea waiting to spring up. My ROUGH-DRAFT® is never truly complete; it’s constantly evolving, and that’s what keeps the adventure thrilling.
How does ROUGH-DRAFT® manage to create a harmonious blend of men’s fashion and traditional outdoor equipment in their products? They offer premium quality without exorbitant prices, and they ensure the items are technical yet not overly ‘outdoor-y’ or too reminiscent of typical gear.
Can you explain how ROUGH-DRAFT® achieves this balance?
Our goal is to deliver top-notch value, ensuring our prices are both reasonable and trustworthy. In terms of design, we’ve found that understated, functional pieces from the outdoors resonate with us best. It’s a delicate balance, but manufacturing items in NYC gives us close control over the production process.
What is the ROUGH—DRAFT® team’s idea of a “functional garment?”
At first, we viewed “function” as a versatile, all-purpose concept. However, with experience, we came to understand that function is primarily about catering to the user’s needs. This implies maintaining simplicity and intentionality. Our clothing pieces should be items you frequently use, items you can rely on.
For ROUGH-DRAFT®, textiles play a significant role. Numerous designs incorporate fabrics sourced from Japan or recycled materials. The origin of this philosophy and its importance to the brand can be traced back to… What led to this emphasis on sustainable materials and Japanese textiles, and why does it hold such significance for ROUGH-DRAFT®?
Currently, approximately 90% of our fabrics originate from various parts of Japan, with around half being manufactured from recycled resources. We don’t label ROUGH—DRAFT® as a “sustainable” brand yet, but we strive to make mindful selections wherever possible. Some of these thoughtful decisions have resulted in our most cherished items.
The fundamental aspect of the ROUGH-DRAFT® design philosophy includes neutral and earthy colors, occasionally accented with patterns. Why did the brand opt for this understated style rather than the vibrant prints and striking bright hues characteristic of traditional outdoor clothing?
The ROUGH-DRAFT brand primarily uses natural and earth tones in its designs, with some patterns mixed in. Instead of using bold prints or super-bright colors like you might see on traditional outdoor gear, why did they choose a more subtle aesthetic?
Essentially, our designs reflect our personal experiences with nature, with each collection drawing inspiration from specific geographical areas we’ve visited. The latest collection, for instance, was inspired by my time in Arizona. I traveled around Sedona and the Grand Canyon National Park, where the unique sandstone formations and subtle colors left a lasting impression on me.
The brand highlights artists such as painters and musicians in their “Field Study” collection. In what ways does the creative community surrounding ROUGH-DRAFT® inspire and impact the brand?
This brand thrives solely because of its community. The artistic minds based in Detroit and New York breathe life into it, and “Field Study” serves as a platform to reveal their unique narratives. It’s intriguing to observe how nature influences their creative journey and manifests itself in their artwork. Essentially, each artist might perceive the same shade of blue differently.
What’s next for ROUGH—DRAFT®?
Currently, we’re in the process of partnering up with the bag and accessory brand, 1733, based out of Chicago. We’ve had our sights set on this collaboration for quite some time, and we’re thrilled that it’s finally happening this coming Spring.
