At EVO 2024, I got to test-drive Hunter x Hunter: Nen x Impact for the first time from Arc System Works and Eighting. Although there’s still much to learn about this upcoming fighting game adaptation of Hunter x Hunter, my initial impression is promising. The characters and mechanics show a good level of depth, making it worth keeping an eye on, particularly for devoted Hunter x Hunter fans.
Hunter x Hunter x Hunter
In Hunter x Hunter: Nen x Impact, battles take place in a team setup with three versus three fighters. You have the freedom to choose from an array of characters straight from the anime and manga series. For this demonstration, I was given the following roster of characters to work with:
- Bisky
- Gon
- Hisoka
- Killua
- Kurapika
- Leorio
- Machi
- Meruem
- Netero
- Uvogin
Based on my extensive experience in team formation for various competitive activities, I strongly believe that allowing each player to choose any three characters from the pool is a fair and engaging approach. This method ensures that everyone has an equal opportunity to select their preferred team composition, adding excitement and personal investment to the game or competition. Additionally, it encourages strategic thinking as players must consider the strengths and weaknesses of each character when making their selection. Overall, this method adds an element of surprise and suspense, making for a more dynamic and enjoyable experience for all involved.
In Nen X Impact, the input design is uncomplicated, similar to games such as Dragon Ball FighterZ. Characters offer diverse autocombo and launcher attacks which propel opponents skyward for aerial combos or backward for wall bounce combinations. Additionally, there’s a meter that fills up over time, allowing you to use super moves. Furthermore, you can summon teammates for assist attacks or substitute with them to introduce a fresh character into the fray. Essentially, all standard mechanics of a tag team fighter are present in this game.
In my experience playing Nen x Impact, I was taken aback by its gameplay. I wasn’t overly impressed with the trailers, but once you get your hands on it, the game is enjoyable. The movements and jumps have a light feel, yet the impact of clashes, moves connecting, and overall interaction are substantial.
In my experience playing the game, Uvogin appeared excessively powerful with this build. His unique move grants an immense boost to his attack power, making him a formidable force to reckon with. While other characters such as Hisoka, Leorio, Killua, Netero, and Meruem provided a fair challenge, Uvogin dominated significant portions of my team once that strength enhancement was activated. The imbalance felt quite overwhelming, but I have faith that Eighting will address this issue before the game’s official release.
Surprisingly impactful
2024 is when I’m eagerly anticipating the launch of Hunter x Hunter: Nen x Impact! Although we still don’t have the full picture, what I’ve played so far has left me pleasantly surprised. It seems that Eighting truly grasps the essence of what makes a vs fighter entertaining, and they’re skillfully applying those concepts in Nen x Impact thus far. This game has certainly caught my attention as a top contender for 2024, and I strongly recommend it to the wider gaming community as well. Keep an eye out for more updates, including a potential release date later this year!
At the Evo 2024 event, we were given an early peek at a private demo build of Hunter x Hunter: Nen x Impact, which is slated for release in 2024. The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC platforms.
