What is the new Hunger Games prequel book about?

The story takes us back to the world of Panem, 24 years prior to The Hunger Games, and it begins on the morning of the selection process, or reaping, for the 50th Hunger Games, which is also known as the Second Quarter Quell,” reads the official book synopsis for Sunrise on the Reaping (as reported by Today).

With the 50th Hunger Games of Panem breaking day, anxiety pervades its districts. In recognition of the Quarter Quell, double the number of tributes are being drafted from their homes this year. Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy attempts to avoid dwelling on his prospects. His sole focus is enduring the day and remaining close to the woman he adores. However, when Haymith’s name is announced, it feels like all his aspirations are shattered. He’s separated from his family and loved one, transported to the Capitol alongside the three other District 12 tributes: a dear friend who’s almost a sibling, an impulsive gambler, and the town’s most haughty girl. As the Games commence, Haymith realizes he’s been deliberately set up for failure. Yet, there persists within him a desire to battle… and for that struggle to echo far beyond the lethal arena.

In the movie series, Woody Harrelson played the role of Haymitch Abernathy. Unlike The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, fans have a preconceived notion about the upcoming prequel novel due to details revealed in 2009’s Catching Fire regarding how Haymitch triumphed in his game, which involved 48 tributes instead of the usual 24. As Katniss and Peeta were preparing for their own Quarter Quell, these details were unfolding.
