Hugh Grant Talks Bridget Jones 4, Teases Daniel Cleaver’s ‘Third Dimension’

As a seasoned gamer who’s seen his fair share of cinematic twists and turns, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and apprehension for Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. Having grown fond of the franchise since its inception, I’ve always found myself rooting for Bridget through her hilarious misadventures and heartwarming romances.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m all geared up for the next chapter in the Bridget Jones saga! The charming actor who brought Daniel Cleaver to life, Hugh Grant, has hinted that the fourth installment, “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” is not just funny but also packs an emotional punch. Can’t wait to dive into this rollercoaster of emotions!

The movie adaptation of “Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy” has finished filming in London and is scheduled to premiere in theaters on February 14, 2025, followed by a streaming release on Peacock. In this continuation, Bridget Jones finds herself navigating her life’s challenges after her husband passes away unexpectedly, aiming to regain control and find happiness once more.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is funny but “very sad,” according to Hugh Grant

Similar to the comedic tone of past Bridget Jones films like Bridget Jones’s Diary, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, and Bridget Jones’s Baby, Grant indicated during an interview on The Graham Norton Show (as reported by IndieWire) that the upcoming fourth movie will also be humorous. Yet, he hinted at some poignant or emotionally charged aspects in the new storyline as well.

Not only is it incredibly amusing, but it’s also deeply moving. However, I didn’t notice any part for Daniel Cleaver in it,” said Grant.

The movie series is adapted from Helen Fielding’s book series with the same title. Although Daniel Cleaver wasn’t present in Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, the filmmakers found a way to incorporate him into the fourth film, even though there was no significant role written for him.

Upon his character’s comeback, Grant commented: “The script is truly exceptional and heartfelt, coming from someone who’s usually critical of scripts. This one was exceptional. [Fielding] had a tragic tale. [Bridget] wed an American screenwriter, had kids, he passed away, and she single-handedly raised them.

He added, “I felt that what they proposed was fine, but not great. And I felt that he needed a third dimension. He’s in his 60s now, you can’t just have him smoothing his way down King’s Road eyeing up young girls. Something needs to have happened to him in the interim. So we invented a rather good — I invented a rather good — interim story.”

Joining Grant in the cast will be Renée Zellweger reprising her role as Emma Thompson, who plays Doctor Rawlings, Jim Broadbent as Colin Jones, Gemma Jones as Pamela Jones, Sarah Solemani as Miranda, Sally Phillips as Sharon, Shirley Henderson as Jude, James Callis as Tom, and Celia Imrie as Una Alconbury. In simpler terms, these talented actors will be joining Grant, with Renée Zellweger playing the main character again, Emma Thompson taking on Doctor Rawlings, Jim Broadbent portraying Colin Jones, Gemma Jones as Pamela Jones, Sarah Solemani as Miranda, Sally Phillips as Sharon, Shirley Henderson as Jude, James Callis as Tom, and Celia Imrie as Una Alconbury.

Additional stars joining the cast include Chiwetel Ejiofor, Leo Woodall, Isla Fisher, and Nico Parker, with more to come. The movie is helmed by director Michael Morris.
