HP doesn’t want Windows on its Steam Deck competitor, but Valve’s “simple” SteamOS

The outstanding Steam Deck by Valve is a fantastic device for portable PC gaming, and while alternatives such as the ROG Ally are equally impressive, they come with a somewhat cumbersome Windows operating system compared to it.

As Valve allows SteamOS access to outside businesses, devices such as the Lenovo Legion GO can now provide Windows-free editions of their gadgets. In the opinion of HP executive Josephine Tan, this is a promising path for all portable PC gaming devices.

HP’s Steam Deck clone will run SteamOS

In an interview with XDA Developers (which has since been removed), Tan stated that the cumbersome characteristics of Windows 10 and 11 discouraged HP from creating a gaming-focused handheld device. This information can be found in the archived version linked here.

“If I don’t like it, I don’t know how to do a product for it,” the executive said.

HP is planning to enter the market with its own handheld device, specifically designed for gaming. But, to ensure a smooth user experience, HP should opt for SteamOS rather than Windows, as this is the preferred platform for such devices.

As an enthusiastic admirer, I’d express it this way: When queried about the possibility of HP developing a portable gaming device using Valve’s OS, I would say ‘absolutely yes!’

Although the Steam Deck hasn’t achieved the same level of success as a device like the Nintendo Switch, it has certainly created a stir in the hardware industry. Previously, Windows was typically the preferred operating system for portable PC devices such as the GPD Win. However, Valve’s commitment to Linux is gradually narrowing the gap between them and Microsoft.

With increasing Proton compatibility and developers such as Ubisoft tailoring new games for the Deck, this device has a promising future. Moreover, SteamOS, being the underlying operating system, may have an extended lifespan due to these developments.
