In a recent interview, Scott Marder, executive producer of Rick and Morty, disclosed that James Gunn from DC Studios and director Zack Snyder made appearances in Season 8, Episode 7, titled “Ricker Than Fiction,” which aired on July 6, 2025. Their roles were caricatures of themselves. He elaborated on their guest spots, the episode’s critique of fandom and filmmaking, as well as their contrasting views on Superman.
Scott Marder says Zack Snyder and James Gunn were ‘good sports’ for Rick and Morty
According to a report by Variety, Scott Marder, the executive producer, shared that both directors were eagerly involved.
According to Marder, they were quite amusing and took everything in stride. They found humor in just about everything we presented them with… They merely shrugged it off with a laugh. The scenario portrays Gunn’s character as the antagonist within the fictional series “Maximum Velocitree,” leading Rick and Morty to step in, employing Rick’s “Movie-lizer” gadget.
At the Warner Bros. studio, Gunn comes across a muscular Snyder. Snyder jokingly remarks to Gunn, “I’ve just watched your updated ‘Superman,’ and here’s some advice – he’s the ‘Man of Steel,’ not the ‘Man of Chatter.'” Later, Snyder comforts Gunn about Rick, referring to him as “the sharpest mind in existence,” and says, “Relax. He can’t replicate our work. Most likely.
Rick and Morty take on the role of antagonists in the remake of the movie, leaving Gunn astonished with their exceptional script. Gunn expresses his admiration, stating, “They’ve surpassed me!” Later, he presents the revised version to Warner Bros., saying, “This isn’t just going to fill seats… it could rescue Hollywood, it could revolutionize everything,” before being struck down by a gun named “Sundae.
Marder transformed the concept from “Book-alizer” to “Movie-lizer,” enabling them to satirize Hollywood. Later on, writer Rob Schrab approached Gunn, who jumped at the opportunity and reportedly recorded his lines the day after completing Superman. Snyder too showed great excitement about the project.
In a behind-the-scenes twist, Dan Harmon penned the dialogue for the “Superman” character and contributed to its appearance, while Marder added a subtle touch by saying, “He clenched his fists,” ensuring it fit their onscreen personas perfectly. An exclusive photo of Snyder and Gunn recording together leaked online, but viewers had to wait until the episode’s airing to discover their secret cameos.
