As a seasoned observer and connoisseur of the cinematic world, I find myself deeply moved by the current state of affairs within the Malayalam film industry. The Hema Committee Report has undeniably shone a harsh but necessary light on the darker corners that have long been hidden from public scrutiny.
Ram Gopal Varma, on his official social media platform, recently posed questions about the state of other industries compared to the Malayalam industry, especially in light of the Hema Committee Report’s exposure. He also wondered how one would become aware of something similar happening in other industries if such an incident occurred.
The director expressed, “If it’s only the Malayalam film industry that’s being scrutinized by the Hema Committee, which is exclusive to Malayalam films, then how can we understand what’s going on in other language industries without committees for each of them as well?”

The comment made by Ram Gopal Varma comes at a time when the Hema Committee Report has sent shockwaves around the Malayalam film industry and its actors. The report submitted made some serious revelations about the film industry and how actors, especially women have to suffer.
The findings of the report have opened up a path for numerous actresses and junior artists to speak out, accusing actors and movie directors of sexual misconduct. Lately, well-known figures in Malayalam cinema such as Jayasurya, Siddique, Mukesh, among others, have been accused by actresses of such offenses.
In addition, filmmakers Ranjith and Thulasidas face similar accusations as actresses have spoken up about their inappropriate behavior. Yet, certain actors have also addressed the claims directed towards them.
Lately, actor Siddique has initiated a legal action against junior artist Revathy Sampath following her allegation of sexual harassment. Similarly, filmmaker Ranjith has countered these claims by asserting his innocence in relation to allegations made by actress Sreelekha Mitra.
It’s worth noting that Siddique, previously holding the position of general secretary in AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists), resigned following accusations. Similarly, Director Ranjith relinquished his role as chairman at Kerala Chalachitra Academy due to public uproar and protests. The protesters are also urging for a female artist to be appointed to the vacant position.
