As a dedicated Monster Hunter Wilds gamer, I can vouch for the variety in weapon choices this game offers. With a total of 14 unique weapons, each one showcases its strengths in distinct areas. Some weapons are tailored to specific roles, and it’s not uncommon for players to find themselves drawn to a select few. For those craving a bit of strategic depth, the Long Sword is an excellent choice.
This long sword has special features that are crucial for tracking progress; if you leverage these features effectively, it becomes a powerful tool for advancing significantly. On the other hand, neglecting its unique attributes is similar to attacking a beast with a mere noodle.
To learn about the particular Long Sword controls for your device, navigate to Settings, then select Info, followed by Play Guide, and finally Weapon Controls to find the Long Sword section.
Long Sword Overview
In a battle, keeping the Long Sword in top shape for maximum damage is essential, which is primarily because of its Spirit Gauge. As you become accustomed to refilling this gauge and turning it bright red, the Long Sword will transform into a completely different weapon for you.
Spirit Gauge

Fundamentally, what you should understand about the Spirit Gauge is that you aim for it to become red. When the Spirit Gauge turns red, you’ll gain access to new, quicker weapon combinations and enhanced damage output. This will significantly improve your combat flow, making it easier to coordinate your attacks, dodge enemy strikes, and overall have a smoother gaming experience.
To fully charge the Spirit Meter, you’ll want a mix of standard attacks and unique abilities. To make it clear which one is which, remember that the Spirit Meter consists of not just one but two kinds of charges: inner and outer charges.
As a gamer, I need to fill up the inner meter of my Spirit Gauge to unleash powerful abilities. To do this, I can use any basic attack combo without depleting my Spirit Gauge. Each hit on a monster contributes significantly towards charging the inner meter. This internal charge is essential for using most Spirit abilities.
To boost the outside of your Spirit Gauge, you will require using two particular moves: Spirit Roundslash, and Focus Strike: Unbound Thrust. These moves will load up the periphery of your Spirit Gauge, which is what you’ll need to power up in order for it to turn red. This is explained further in the combos section. These attacks will charge the outer rim of your Spirit Gauge.
To effectively execute your Spirit attacks, such as Spirit Roundslash, it’s essential that the yellow bar within the Spirit Gauge is at least partially filled, contrary to any assumptions about turning the bar red.
Long Sword Combos And Tips

The Long Sword performs slightly differently based on whether the Spirit Gauge is full (red) or not. It will be significantly more potent when it is, but mastering its standard moves is essential for regularly filling up the red Spirit Gauge.
To maximize effectiveness with the Long Sword, aim to frequently activate the Red Spirit Gauge. Strategically time your attacks for its accumulation, and avoid unneeded risks. When the Red Spirit Gauge is activated, pour all your strength into your attacks.
Basic Attack Combos
You have a good deal of flexibility when it comes to using the attack sequences with the Long Sword. These combinations aren’t strictly linear or hierarchical, so you can switch between them freely since there isn’t necessarily a most powerful finale to these “pseudo-combinations”.
In essence, one of your basic attack options will perform a slower, broader strike, while the other basic attack option will execute a faster, thrusting attack.
These attacks are going to fill the interior section of your Spirit Gauge.
Basic Attack Combos (Red Spirit Gauge)

When you execute your attack combos while the Red Spirit Gauge is active, they will resemble their weaker counterparts. However, the advantage lies in their speed and potency as they will be executed much faster and deal significantly higher damage compared to their regular versions.
Like normal attacks, you can mix and match Standard Attacks with a Red Spirit Gauge.
Fade Slash

The Fade Slash move is executed by simultaneously pressing both your regular attack buttons, serving as a useful maneuver for positioning when wielding a Long Sword. This action will slightly push you backwards in the direction you’re facing, and it delivers a moderate amount of damage, compared to other attacks.
The Swift Attack, known as Fade Slash, fills a larger area within the Spirit Gauge compared to most other moves, and it’s swift. This speed and extent make it an effective method for rapidly charging the interior section of the gauge, which is essential for using abilities that rely on that part of the bar.
Spirit Charge
Spirit Charge has a lot of different possibilities, and we’ll go over each one.
- Holding Spirit Charge charges up the interior of the Spirit Gauge. You can hold this indefinitely, charging that interior to full, if you wish. While you’re charging this, your movement speed is going to be greatly reduced.
- Releasing Spirit Charge is going to unleash a different attack based on how long you’ve held it. Releasing it immediately is going to unleash Spirit Blade I; holding it a little longer gets it to Spirit Blade II, and the same for Spirit Blade III.
- Holding Spirit Charge for the maximum charge is going to unleash Spirit Roundslash. If you’ve got a Red Spirit Gauge, you can follow up Spirit Roundslash with another, even more powerful attack called Spinning Crimson Slash.
You may link Spirit Blade I with II, and continue this sequence, as long as you have sufficient Spirit Gauge charge to do so.
Landing these attacks will deplete the inner power of your Spirit Meter, simultaneously filling up the outer power of your Spirit Meter. Eventually, this will result in a fully charged Red Spirit Meter.
Foresight Slash

With Foresight Slash, you unleash the full power stored in your Spirit Gauge. However, this move should be executed right within a sequence of attacks, and the preparation is certainly justified by its impact.
Looking ahead significantly pulls you back first, followed by propelling you forward forcefully. This method is excellent for evading an attack, and it enhances the evasion while inflicting damage.
Landing this attack after successfully dodging an attack will fill the Spirit Gauge.
Spirit Thrust

The move called Spirit Thrust propels you ahead, boasting one of the longest ranges among Long Sword attacks. Landing a hit with this lunge is particularly effective when your Spirit Gauge is more than half full. Interestingly, following a successful strike, an additional attack will automatically be triggered.
This secondary move is referred to as Spirit Helm Breaker. It propels you skyward, then slams you back down repeatedly, causing significant damage to the monster. During this flight, you’ll evade any ground-level attacks intended for you, which bears a striking resemblance to an Insect Glaive attack.
When your Spirit Meter turns red, it triggers another powerful move known as Spirit Discharge Strike, inflicting even greater harm. However, performing this attack while the meter is full will deplete it, requiring you to recharge it again.
Fortunately, it remains straightforward as it retains the energy needed to reach almost the threshold of it.
As a gamer, I find it smart to save my most potent moves for when my Red Spirit Gauge is running low. Using this attack when the gauge is nearly depleted ensures I don’t squander its power on an empty meter, yet I can still unleash its full force!
Special Sheathe

Upon initiating your Spirit Charge, the Quick Sheathing mechanism triggers instantly, offering you two distinct attack options: Iai Cut and Iai Spirit Cut.
By default, the Iai Slash action regularly fills up the inside of your Spirit Meter. On the other hand, the Spirit technique will fill up the outside of your Spirit Meter when executed at the right moment during a monster’s attack.
In a battle, defaulting this attack could help you keep a decent amount of Spirit Meter filled, while the Spirit variant proves incredibly useful when executed precisely at the right moment.
Focus Strike: Unbound Thrust

In combat, the move known as the Focused Strike with the Long Sword is referred to as “Unrelenting Thrust“. Much like its counterparts, it’s used when a monster has an open wound. With this strike, you can directly attack that vulnerable spot to inflict significant damage.
This action also has an advantage: it reinforces the outer layer of your Spirit Gauge, similar to Spirit Roundslash. It’s an effective method for preserving combat rhythm as it enables you to quickly replenish your Red Spirit Gauge once it depletes.
