How to trap monsters – Monster Hunter Wilds

Just like in past games, Monster Hunter Wilds offers players the opportunity to catch and subdue monsters for larger rewards, which may even be necessary for certain quests. But don’t underestimate the challenge – you’ll need specialized gear and a good grasp of a monster’s various states to succeed.

How to trap monsters

To catch a monster, you’ll require a Shock Trap or Pitfall Trap, and at least two Tranquilizing Bombs (or their equivalents). To set the trap, attack the monster until a skull icon appears above it on your mini-map. Then, position a Shock Trap on the ground so the monster walks onto it or touches it. After it’s trapped, aim and toss two Tranquilizing Bombs at its head.

For particularly massive monsters who manage to evade or withstand Shock Traps, it’s advisable to use Pitfall Traps instead. These traps are specifically engineered for larger beasts and tougher entities that outgrow or resist the capabilities of Shock Traps. However, keep in mind that Pitfall Traps can only be deployed on solid ground surfaces, such as the forest floor, and cannot be set up on vines or other areas without a stable foundation to create the pit.

Regarding the Tranquilizer Bombs, they cause monsters to fall asleep when they’re trapped and have taken enough damage. The ideal time to use them is when the distinctive skull symbol appears, but occasionally they work even when the monster is hobbling back to its lair with a teardrop icon. To access the Tranquilizer Bombs in your inventory, cycle through your tools where your health potions are stored, and then press ‘X’ on Xbox or ‘Square’ on PlayStation to throw them. You can also opt for Tranquilizer Ammo or Tranquilizer Blades if you find those more suitable.

Remember that certain monsters are simply too large for trapping, making them only defeatable. Therefore, when pursuing monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds, it’s crucial to conserve your resources by focusing on slaying them instead of attempting to trap them, as defeated monsters often yield better rewards.
