How to Train Your Dragon Reviews Praise Live-Action Remake’s Visuals but Call It Unoriginal

Initially enchanting audiences in 2010, the upcoming live-action adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon” is nearing its release date and has already attracted its initial critical appraisals. The 2025 production is a faithful retelling of Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois’ 2010 masterpiece, but with real-life characters taking the place of the original animated ones. However, early feedback on the remake indicates that while it successfully preserves the spirit of the original, it seems to lack innovative elements in comparison to the cherished franchise.

How to Train Your Dragon’s live-action remake draws mixed reviews from critics

In the main cast, you’ll find Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Nick Frost, Julian Dennison, and Gerard Butler. The story of How to Train Your Dragon revolves around Hiccup, a young Viking, and Toothless, a Night Fury dragon, who form an unconventional bond. As events progress, this pair embarks on a dangerous adventure with the goal of safeguarding both their species from an impending disaster.

In her critique for the 2025 version of How to Train Your Dragon, Helen O’Hara from Empire Magazine observed that, despite DeBlois crafting it with “genuine affection and diligence,” it displayed an excessive reverence towards its predecessor. She further commented, “Even when remaking a film, there should be more innovation and less repetition of popular elements.

Hannah Flint from Time Out shared similar thoughts with O’Hara in her review, commenting that “How to Train Your Dragon” only meets the minimum requirements for its remake. On the other hand, Peter Debruge of Variety had a more optimistic viewpoint about the live-action adaptation. He acknowledged that transitioning from computer animation to live-action is a safer choice compared to the risky approach of updating it experimentally.

Although Daniel Howat deemed it an “extra addition” to the animated film, he showered it with high praise for its “stunning visuals, charming dragons, and a spot-on performance by Mason Thames.” He even went so far as to say that the remake of How to Train Your Dragon effectively “captures the essence and spirit of the original.

Regardless of the diverse opinions expressed by critics, more responses about the How to Train Your Dragon live-action remake are expected soon as it premieres in cinemas on June 13, 2025.
