In the ongoing success of Lilo & Stitch and Ballerina’s second week, Universal is strategically planning for a more robust opening for its live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon compared to any of the original animated films. A high level of audience recognition and support from premium formats will likely enable the remake to break the trilogy’s previous opening records.
How to Train Your Dragon remake’s box office prediction revealed
According to Deadline, it’s predicted that the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon will debut in the U.S., showing in around 4,000 cinemas, with estimated earnings ranging from $65 million to $75 million.
In its opening weekend, this movie surpassed the initial weekends of all three original films: “How to Train Your Dragon” from 2010, which made $43.7 million, “How to Train Your Dragon 2” in 2014 with earnings of $49.4 million, and “The Hidden World” in 2019 that brought in a whopping $55 million. The director, Dean DeBlois, is back, and this time around, Mason Thames and Nico Parker portray refreshed versions of the characters Hiccup and Astrid. The film will debut with enhanced screenings across various formats like IMAX (on 413 screens), 4DX, and ScreenX.
The PG-rated film cost $150 million before marketing. The U.S. previews start Thursday at 2 p.m.

The worldwide release of the How to Train Your Dragon remake is expected to generate approximately $110 million from international markets upon full launch and previews in offshore locations. When added to its domestic earnings, the global income from this film’s debut is estimated to range between $175 million and $185 million.
Initially shown, the movie has demonstrated impressive earnings abroad. Screenings in South Korea started on June 6 and generated a substantial $4.3 million from 1,644 screens, receiving a high 99% CinemaScore Egg rating. The U.K. and Ireland contributed $1.2 million, Germany followed with $1.1 million, and France added another $1.4 million to the total.
In Latin America, Brazil amassed approximately $2.7 million, and Mexico garnered around $2.1 million. The movie is currently topping presales in China, a region where previous installments of the franchise earned a total of $120 million. At present, the film is being released in all significant markets except Japan, which is scheduled to open on September 5.
