How to play Free Roam splitscreen – Mario Kart World

Sharing the thrill of Mario Kart side-by-side with a friend is an age-old custom, and luckily, you can do it in Mario Kart World! The game’s Free Roam mode allows two players to engage in splitscreen play, enabling them to traverse the world and uncover some of the game’s numerous hidden treasures. However, starting a session isn’t immediately obvious, as there’s no prominent option on the main menu.

Free Roam splitscreen

In Mario Kart World, you can enjoy a split-screen gameplay experience with another player, freely roaming around. However, do take note that this mode has certain restrictions – there are no P Switches to gather in this scenario. For assistance in navigating the map, check out our Mario Kart World guide on Shackmaps. Here’s how you can set up splitscreen Free Roam:

1. Start the game and navigate to the ‘Free Play’ mode.
2. Select your preferred course from the list.
3. Choose the number of players – ensure it’s set to 2 for split-screen play.
4. Set the camera view, pick your character, and customize your kart as desired.
5. Once ready, press start to begin your adventure in Mario Kart World!

  1. Highlight Online Play at the main menu
  2. Select the 2P option
  3. On the next screen, press L+R on the controllers you want to use
  4. Press A when you’re ready
  5. Select the Friends tab at the bottom of the screen
  6. Choose Create Room and confirm your choice
  7. Both players can now choose a character and kart

The procedure might seem a tad intricate, but it’s managed entirely via the ‘Online Play’ option available on the main menu. Click the ‘Two Player’ button (labeled as 2P), then connect the controllers you prefer using. On the following screen, opt for the ‘Friends’ section at the bottom.

To play together online, choose ‘Online Play’ on the main menu. Click ‘Two Player’, link your preferred controllers, and then select ‘Friends’.

On this Friends interface, you’ll see everyone in your friend list, but what you really want is the “Create Room” option at the top. This sets up an interim space akin to a lobby where you can navigate around the map before the race begins. Once you’ve selected your characters and karts, feel free to start exploring the world!

In the Splitscreen Free Roam mode, it’s identical to playing solo Free Roam, except that there are no P Switches in this version. You can still search for the mystery panels and Peach Medallions, but you won’t be able to participate in switch challenges.
