Elden Ring Nightreign essentially transforms the universe of Elden Ring into a multiplayer realm, infused with roguelike aspects. Despite numerous modifications in the game, it retains a sense of familiarity for those who have previously played Elden Ring. The key difference here is that instead of creating your own character, you will be using pre-set characters.

In Nightreign, you assume different characters known as Nightfarers, each with distinct abilities. During gameplay, you can swiftly switch between weapons and spells, although they cater to specific roles. The character Wylder is the central figure of the game, and he’s who you initially control during tutorials. Consequently, Wylder is typically the most recommended choice for continuous play.

Overview of Wylder

From the start, you’ll control six characters called Nightfarers. However, at first, you’ll take on the role of Wylder. By design, he comes equipped with a buckler shield for swift deflection and his unique greatsword. In essence, Wylder is versatile but not exceptionally skilled in any one area.

He is evenly distributed throughout all areas. His main strength is his attribute, but he has the flexibility in his development that allows him to effectively use weapons based on Dexterity, or even magic like Sorceries and Incantations as supportive options in different situations. However, it’s important to remember that you should never underestimate Wylder’s expertise in strength-based combat, especially if you want to inflict consistent damage.

Despite this, Wylder’s construction offers a variety of options due to its robust HP. In combat, they can withstand damage thanks to their high HP, allowing for a tankier build utilizing heavier shields and colossal swords for increased damage and hyper armor. Alternatively, you could opt for a lighter build with straight swords to move faster and close in on enemies more quickly, or dart around the battlefield with greater agility.

As a devotee, I’d say Wylder is incredibly flexible – he’s not as precise or tanky as characters like Raider, nor does he wield the focused magic of Recluse. Yet, Wylder has an uncanny ability to adapt to any situation Limveld throws his way, ensuring he rarely finds himself in a predicament where he’s at a significant disadvantage.

Wylder’s Traits

Just like all other Nightfarers, Wylder possesses three unique characteristics: a Passive Ability, Character Skill, and Ultimate Art. Since Wylder doesn’t have a fixed playstyle, these traits reflect the diverse nature that he embodies.

Passive Ability

In simpler terms, Wylder’s special ability can be described as a sort of “Second Chance” or “Last Stand.” This unique feature enables Wylder to avoid fatal blows once, by instantly moving backward and evading damage that would otherwise deplete his Health Points (HP) entirely. This quick maneuver barely halts the ongoing action and keeps Wylder’s HP at its previous level instead of reducing it to a single point.

To avoid being caught off guard, always keep a sharp eye out as things can happen swiftly. This way, you won’t miss the activation of the skill a second time.

Alternatively, Sixth Sense shows great generosity. If you die later on, the ability gets renewed immediately upon revival. Furthermore, you can also stroll through a Site of Grace to refresh it, making it extremely useful if there’s one close by a challenging confrontation.

Character Skill

Wylder’s Character Ability is called “Claw Shot”. This skill is quite versatile, useful in both combat situations and for movement. With it, Wylder can pull lighter adversaries towards him, whereas he will be drawn towards heavier opponents instead. In essence, the majority of enemies smaller than bosses can be pulled closer to you, and they will momentarily stumble during this process. Larger enemies will typically be those that are considered bosses or simply larger than typical foes.

If Wylder yanks you towards him, you won’t be momentarily disoriented or unbalanced, so be mindful to avoid getting swept up in their assaults.

In this game, the Claw Shot can pull enemies towards you only if they aren’t guarding. But what makes it particularly useful is that it can instantly break through any guard, regardless of how close or far away an enemy is blocking. Additionally, you can gauge the range of the Claw Shot by holding down the skill button before releasing it. If the reticle lights up on your targeted enemy, then you’ll be able to reach them. However, if the reticle fades, it means you won’t be able to hit them from that distance.

In summary, the Claw Shot serves a dual purpose – it’s not just for targeting enemies. If there’s no enemy locked-on, you can use it to point towards the ground and propel yourself swiftly in that direction. This comes in handy for evading obstacles or enemies, but also for quickly moving when the play area is shrinking rapidly around you.

Ultimate Art

Lastly, we present Wylder’s Ultimate Art, the Onslaught Impale. This move is exceptionally potent, capable of inflicting immense damage on the opponent and additional posture-breaking damage. It can also be empowered, amplifying the HP and posture damage it inflicts even further. In actual combat, a fully charged Onslaught Impale almost certainly shatters an enemy’s defense, creating an opportunity for a devastating critical hit.

Keep in mind that when you use the Ultimate Art, neither invincibility nor hyper armor is activated. If you’re hit during this time, the attack will be cancelled. However, some charge is retained, enabling you to recharge it faster. Fortunately, Onslaught Stake has a broad area of effect, allowing you to initiate it from a distance and still connect with the enemy.

Best Weapons To Use With Wylder

In the game, Wylder is versatile enough to handle any weapon that comes his way, but he excels particularly with his primary weapon, the greatsword. He benefits from an extended skillset derived from Elden Ring’s original design when wielding a greatsword, and many of his abilities are optimized for this type of weapon. For instance, upon completing Wylder’s first Remembrance, you receive a Relic that allows him to perform a special follow-up attack with his Claw Shot. However, this unique ability can only be activated when he is equipped with a greatsword.

While it’s true that you no longer need to worry about weight restrictions with Nightreign, it doesn’t necessarily mean you should solely rely on greatswords. If you’d prefer heavier weapons that inflict striking damage instead of the slash damage typical of greatswords when fighting Wylder, you’ll still have an equal chance of success. His high Strength stat is what makes him formidable in combat.

Instead of eliminating weight and stat restrictions on weapons, there are now level prerequisites in place. Therefore, it’s essential to ensure that your character has reached the appropriate level before attempting to wield a potent weapon.

In other words, Wylder’s Dexterity is rated B, which allows him to handle a variety of speedy weapons effectively. Consider incorporating katanas for some bleeding effect or daggers for swift attacks into his equipment. Given that he has a C scaling in Intelligence, Faith, and Arcane, these skills can still prove useful for Wylder. However, magic should primarily serve as backup for Wylder, as his damage output and FP capacity lag significantly behind those who specialize in these areas.
