As a devoted Destiny fan, particularly one who appreciates the finer points of in-game style, we’ve all been eagerly awaiting a Taken Shader for quite some time. Well, the wait might be coming to an end with the Heresy episode of Destiny 2! Although a genuine Taken shader may remain elusive due to technical constraints, the Umbral Rumble shader certainly doesn’t disappoint. Here’s hoping you share my fondness for chess, because this one’s all about the game of kings!
How to get the Umbral Rumble Taken Shader
This shader is hidden within a challenging chess game that the community has been trying to conquer for quite some time. The game is intricate and holds many secrets yet to be uncovered by the diligent efforts of the community. If you’ve kept current with the game, obtaining this shader isn’t overly difficult; however, if you haven’t, be prepared for a more substantial effort.
You’ll be glad to know that even though the game has a whopping 60 chess pieces, you just require four of them to earn the shader, and amazingly, all four are located at the same spot!
Crucial Reminder: To tackle this puzzle, make sure you’ve progressed in Destiny 2 up to Act II: Rites of the Deep within the storyline of Heresy. You should be able to reach Eris Morn’s domain via her apartment portal at the Last City. The entrance will only become accessible once you’ve advanced that far. If you’re returning after a break, expect approximately 8 hours of gameplay to catch up.
Where to find the four chess pieces you need
In Eris Morn’s apartment building is where you’ll discover all the chess pieces you require. Therefore, they should appear within The Last City for you.
Chess piece #1
Right next to the entrance of the apartment complex, where the cleaning robot is moving about, you’ll find a chess piece resting on a table near a plant pot.
Chess piece #2
Climb two sets of stairs, and upon reaching the second landing, you’ll notice two women engaged in conversation to your right near the stairway. To their side, there’s an enclosed staircase with some dark rope, and at the top, partially concealed by shadows, lies a chess piece.
Chess piece #3
Go into Eris’ apartment, and on the table in the middle of the room is the next chess piece.
Chess piece #4
To acquire the last chess piece needed, look for it next to the Taken altar situated in the room’s corner. Gathering this item will net you two pawns, a knight, and a bishop. Once you’ve collected all your required pieces, head towards the glowing green portal that leads to Eris’ new residence. Keep in mind that this portal only appears when you reach the appropriate stage in Act II.
Upon reaching the serene sanctuary of Noiseless Chantry within Eris Morn’s Throneworld, I recommend venturing towards the ledge close to the portal and taking a leap of faith. The descent might feel a bit clumsy at first, but with a little practice, you should master it in no time. Hidden beneath this area is a charming chess set, waiting for your discovery. Approach the table right in the heart of the room to find your prize, then select “Pick up the King” when prompted to unlock a secret new destination.
The Chess Puzzle
When you reach out to handle the chess set, you’ll instantly find yourself in a spacious room dominated by an oversized chessboard. You’ll materialize right in the center of the board. Behind you will be several platforms with symbols representing chess pieces suspended above them. If you step onto one and aim your weapon at the board, you can shoot a piece to land on the square you hit.
Or more concisely:
Reach for the chess set, and suddenly, you’re in a large room filled with a massive chessboard. You appear right in the middle of it. Behind you are platforms with chess symbol markers. Stand on one, aim your weapon at the board, and shoot to place a piece on the square you hit.
Consider employing a reliable hand cannon or bow for this task, since you don’t want to accidentally target the incorrect square. In case you mistakenly hit the wrong square, immediately hop onto the platform behind you and interact with the totem there to correct the mistake.
To clarify, let’s arrange the discovered pieces in two distinct layouts next. Initially, position the four items that were found in Eris’s apartment. For your reference, imagine the locations where you stand to place these pieces are at the base of the board for the following diagrams. I am merely using the initial letters of each piece’s name for placements.
- P – Pawn
- B – Bishop
- K – Knight
First layout
Initially, some game pieces will be on the board, but don’t fret, they won’t impede your placement decisions. When you aim and shoot (ADS), all pieces become semi-transparent, allowing you to see and fire through them. Once these initial pieces are arranged, the board will automatically clear, giving you full access to the bottom platforms, which previously had limited pieces. Now, it’s time for us to enter the final arrangement of game pieces on the board.
Second layout
Spend a little more time on this task, ensuring each shot is well-aimed, similar to when working with The Wish Wall in The Last Wish. Additionally, there are additional components scattered around (you don’t have to organize their storage; feel free to place them wherever suits you during this phase). Here’s a guide for the legend below:
Take your time and aim carefully as if you were working on The Wish Wall from The Last Wish. You can place any extra parts freely around, without worrying about organizing their storage, during this section. Use the legend provided below as reference:
Or more informally:
Go slow, make sure each shot counts like when dealing with The Wish Wall in The Last Wish. You don’t need to worry about arranging extra pieces; just drop them where you please during this part of the game. Check out the legend below for guidance.
- P – Pawn
- B – Bishop
- K – Knight
R – Rook - Q – Queen
Once everything is set in motion, a wave of verdant energy sweeps over the game board, and you’ll find your reward waiting for you in the room’s front storage chest. Inside, you’ll discover your Umbral Rumble shader and an attractive spacecraft. Additionally, you can head to the elevated platform nearby to witness a unique video sequence.
Important note: All the information in this article was slowly discovered over days and weeks of effort by countless members of the Destiny 2 community. The effort that Destiny 2 fans put into solving these puzzles and figuring all this stuff out was absolutely incredible, and as always, I am left in awe by the passion that Guardians everywhere have for the game.
