In Atomfall, the Atomfall Metal Detector is a valuable asset, helping you uncover hidden stashes buried beneath the ground. These stashes offer resources, collectibles, and even crucial information needed for certain leads. It’s essential that you acquire this Metal Detector promptly; otherwise, you might accidentally overlook these useful items without knowing it. Fortunately, there’s a free one available near the start if you know where to look. Here’s how to get the Metal Detector in Atomfall and how to use it once you have it in your inventory.
Where to find the Atomfall Metal Detector
On the map provided, I’ve highlighted essential spots and your path to find the Atomfall Metal Detector. These places are all near the initial bunker in Slatten Dale. After making up your mind about assisting the Scientist in Atomfall or not, and exiting the bunker, turn right and climb the hill leading to the bridge. Walk beneath the bridge towards the helicopter wreckage site. You can stealthily approach the solitary Outlaw here by hiding in the grass, then execute a Takedown. After this, proceed past the helicopter to enter the Slate Mine Caves.
On my journey through the dark cavern, I warn you about a pesky horde of bats lurking ahead. These critters will persistently nibble away at your vitality unless you manage to get rid of them completely. Push forward and you’ll come across a friendly merchant named Reg Stansfield, but for now, don’t engage with him. Instead, look to your left where you’ll find an entrance guarded by signs telling you to “Get Lost” or “Be Gone”, among other colorful phrases.
Venturing through that doorway leads you back into Slatten Dale, but a bit more to the north. To your right lies a zone packed with outlaws, so opt for the left side instead. There, you’ll come across a stream flowing into a sizable water pool. Stick to the left bank of the water and on some rocky outcrops, you’ll discover an outlaw’s body along with the Atomfall Metal Detector. Hurry up and take it because a horde of mutated fish (or leeches) might be heading your way and will attack if you linger near the water too long. This approach is advantageous as it’s near the beginning, doesn’t cost anything, and gets you the Metal Detector quickly.
In Atomfall’s game, there are alternative methods to acquire the Metal Detector, just like many other items. Recall Reg Stansfield, the trader you encountered earlier in the Slate Mine Caves? If you manage to negotiate with him before discovering the Metal Detector through other means, he might have one for sale. However, keep in mind that you’ll need to trade other items to get it from him, so it’s not necessarily the most cost-effective option when there’s a free method available nearby.
If you prefer not to trade with Reg Stansfield, you could resort to an extreme measure (no joke intended) – taking his life and plundering his remains for the Metal Detector and other valuable items. This action is cost-free, but it permanently eliminates Reg as a trading partner throughout your gameplay, so you’ll miss out on any additional items he might acquire later. I wouldn’t advise this method either, so let him live in peace!
How to use the Atomfall Metal Detector
After adding the Atomfall Metal Detector to your items, there’s no need for additional actions or equipping it. Instead, an icon will appear in the bottom left corner of your screen when a hidden cache is close by. When this occurs, simply pull out the detector, direct it, and observe the red lights on its top. The lights indicate the direction to the buried cache; rotate the device until the central light illuminates, then proceed forward while keeping that light lit. As you approach, the needle will climb higher up the dial, eventually reaching the maximum point where all five red lights flash, signaling you’ve reached your target. At this point, follow the “Dig” prompt to retrieve your reward.
