How to find and catch Speartuna in Monster Hunter Wilds

To use a chilly Swordfish as a Greatsword in Monster Hunter Wilds, it’s essential to capture several Speartuna first. These formidable fish are not common, appearing only in specific areas, and their catch is quite the feat. Let me guide you through the process.

To equip a frosty Swordfish as a Greatsword in Monster Hunter Wilds, you need to capture some Speartuna initially. These powerful fish are not easily found, existing only in certain spots, and capturing them requires skill and determination. Here’s the way to do it.

How to find Speartuna in Monster Hunter Wilds

As I’ve discovered through my gaming adventures, the most reliable spot to stumble upon Speartuna is in Area 13 of the Scarlet Forest, particularly during the Fallow period in the evening. Towards the farthest corner of the area, near a collapsible trap, there’s a secluded side pool. It’s quite likely that one or two Speartuna will be hanging out there.

As a fish enthusiast, you’ll easily recognize them by their distinctive long, spiky fins at the back, vibrant red and silver scales, and the unique spears protruding from their faces – yes, I’m talking about the Barracudas! If you haven’t already, pitch your tent at the Pop-up Camp in Area 12, right along the coastline. It’s the perfect spot for an up-close encounter with these fascinating creatures!

As a keen fan, if I can’t spot the speartuna in its familiar haunt straight away, I’d recommend heading back to camp, taking a breather, and spending 500 Points to reset the world to Evening Fallow. Then, I suggest checking again and repeating this process as many times as necessary for a successful search.

How to catch Speartuna in Monster Hunter Wilds

Speartunas are considered “giant” fish, so for catching them, you’ll need the durable Tuff Joint Bait. You can only acquire this by completing the final fishing side quest titled “The Catch of a Lifetime!”. Once you have the bait, go to where the Speartunas are found and cast your line.

Larger fish called Speartuna don’t instantly dart towards the bait unlike smaller ones. Instead, you should keep the bait moving and make it flick or wiggle like a live fish to catch their attention. Catching one might take up to five minutes of persistent attempts, so remember to be patient.

When a Speartuna attacks, promptly press the hook release button and try to exhaust it by reeling it in gradually. Here are some crucial tips:

1. Be quick with your response when the fish strikes.
2. Press the hook release button immediately.
3. Gradually tire out the fish by reeling it in.

  • Move the fishing line in the same direction as the Speartuna when it swims side to side. This helps keep the line from snapping.
  • Pull in the opposite direction of the Speartuna if it goes near an obstacle.
  • When the fish jumps, note its direction and move the rod that way. So if the fish goes straight up, pull up on the line, and so on. Then press the hook button again to force the Speartuna back into the water.

To exhaust the fish, play the jump-and-pole minigame between 3 to 5 rounds. Once tired, swiftly tug up and down on the fishing rod to begin pulling in your catch. Persist with this motion until, finally, the Speartuna emerges from the water.

To become proficient at catching Speartuna, since you’ll need to catch it six times to gather the six Speartuna Fins necessary for crafting the Rarity 8 Freezer Speartuna Greatsword, it would be beneficial to allocate ample time and practice.

Surprisingly, whirling about with a massive iced fish isn’t as meme-worthy as one might assume, given its impressive Ice attribute and robust base damage. Granted, it’s far from the ideal, fully rolled, and enhanced Artian weapon, but then again, who among us can boast of that?

Enjoy your spearfishing expedition for the elusive Speartuna! Much like traditional fishing, it’s a challenge that calls for endurance and resilience in the face of unexpected turns.
