How to Deal With Monster Roars in Monster Hunter Wilds

In Monster Hunter Wilds, every action taken by the monsters is designed to challenge the player but not overwhelm them. The player has the ability to cope with, reduce, or even prevent these actions, including roar attacks. This aligns with the purpose of the Hunters Guild – an organization that analyzes monster behavior in order to develop effective hunting strategies. Since most monsters possess roar moves, it seems unusual if there wasn’t a way for players to counteract them.

Roaring during a hunt is not a sign that the hunt has concluded, instead it disrupts the battle rhythm, halts crucial abilities, and momentarily stuns the hunters, rendering them ineffective. It’s more of an aggravating inconvenience than a significant vulnerability. Fortunately, there are various strategies to mitigate its effects.

How to Counter Monster Roars in MH Wilds

In Monster Hunter Wilds, there are various strategies players can employ to counteract a monster’s roar during battle. While armor skills and weapons do factor in, it’s also possible to compensate effectively without the required gear, thanks to some clever mechanisms.

There are two categories of growls: feeble ones and powerful ones. Regardless of their intensity, they both incapacitate an enemy for the same length of time without causing any harm. However, it’s worth noting that the weaker one is simpler to counteract compared to the stronger one.

Use a Shield

Setting up a protective barrier prior to a monster’s roar ensures it won’t have any impact. Only weapons that possess a defensive or shield-like function can create this barrier. Out of the total 14 weapons in the game, six are capable of doing so. These include the Great Sword, Sword & Shield combo, Lance, Gunlance, Charge Blade, and Heavy Bowgun.

Equip Earplugs Skill

With the Earplugs skill activated, it lessens the impact of a beast’s roar on you. The Earplugs skill offers three tiers of protection: as you advance in levels, your ability to resist and ultimately silence the roars strengthens significantly, reaching its peak at Level 3 where you can completely mute them.

  • Level 1: Reduces the effects of weak monster roars.
  • Level 2: Nullifies weak monster roars and reduces the effects of strong monster roars.
  • Level 3: Nullifies weak and strong monster roars.

Earplugs can be found in specific high-tier armor collections, such as the Earplugs Charm Level 1 and the Earplugs Jewel Level 2.

Perfect Dodge

As a skilled gamer, I’ve discovered a technique that lets me flawlessly dodge enemy roars, completely bypassing any damage and even causing a stagger. Mastering this move demands impeccable timing – one wrong step can throw the whole thing off balance. However, for those wielding Dual Blades or Bows, perfecting this method is crucial because it forms an integral part of their combat arsenal.

Counter Attack

In Monster Hunter Wilds, the Long Sword boasts a unique weapon combination that triggers a retaliatory strike when a monster launches an attack or roars. This defensive maneuver provides the hunter with temporary invincibility during the counterattack period, safeguarding them from damage and any stagger effects.

Run Out Of Range

Monster growls emit an Area of Effect (AoE) within a certain radius. Typically, players are close enough to monsters for combat, so the AoE can go unnoticed. However, if you can forecast when a monster will roar, it’s straightforward to outrun the AoE before it occurs. This might seem contradictory because usually, dodging roars is done to preserve the DPS window, but in this case, it could be beneficial to move out of the AoE to maintain uninterrupted damage output.

In battles, monsters tend to make loud noises at the onset and when they move to new locations before attacking again. Be vigilant during these instances as it can help you anticipate when such noises will occur, thereby improving your ability to predict their movements.
