How to charge and use the Charge Blade in Monster Hunter Wilds

The Charge Blade’s prowess at subduing powerful enemies using its Element Discharge sequences earned it a reputation as one of the most destructive weapons within the realm of Monster Hunter Wilds.

Unlike other popular choices such as the Switch Axe and Longsword, mastering the Charge Blade requires some time and practice. To effectively utilize this weapon in Monster Hunter World, you’ll need to first charge your elemental phials. Here’s a breakdown of charging techniques and fundamental tips for using the Charge Blade.

How to charge the Charge Blade in Monster Hunter Wilds

In Monster Hunter Wilds, you can fill up your Charge Blade phials by executing a specific move, often called ‘Charge’, when using Sword Mode. To do this, press R2 + O/RT + B simultaneously. Keep in mind that the charge will only be successful if you’ve accumulated enough Sword Energy through your sword mode attacks. Additionally, you can collect multiple energy stacks at once by performing a Charged Attack called the Double Dash combo.

  • Hold O/B in Sword Mode + Release the input once your sword flashes red + Follow up with a weak strike (△/Y) for a few extra slashes and a good dose of extra energy.

Here’s a simpler way to put it: The colors on your sword and the vials beneath your weapon power gauge will help you keep track of the number of elemental charges you can obtain using the Charge ability. Yellow means you have three charges, light red indicates four, and red signifies five. Additionally, if you carry out sword attacks after a successful charge, you can overcharge the vials to gain up to five extra charges.

As a gamer, after filling up my phials with energy, I’ll be ready to switch to Axe Mode by pressing O/B and △/Y simultaneously. Alternatively, I can enter Axe Mode by executing a Morph Slash (R2/RT + △/Y) or Power Axe Mode. The latter not only allows me to perform my weapon’s signature Element Discharge attacks at a lower cost but also reduces the expense of these attacks by half. I can activate Power Axe Mode in various ways as needed.

  • By hitting wounds with a Focus Slash: Double Rend attack (L2/LT + R1/RB no matter your mode of choice).
  • By performing a mounted Focus Slash (R1/RB) against a wound.
  • By manually performing a Savage Axe Slash (△/Y) after a Perfect Guard.

Remember that activating Axe Mode prior to a charge won’t fill any phials. Similarly, you can initiate an Element Boost and execute a Super Amped Element Discharge attack by performing a Shield Element Boost (hold down O/B after a charge). Just be cautious as this move will deplete all of your charged phials.

How to use the Charge Blade in Monster Hunter Wilds

aim to fill up your phials first, then unleash its powerful discharge combos at opportune moments. To compensate for the weapon’s lengthy animations, employ traps to pin enemies down and take advantage of their blind spots when fighting quicker opponents. Don’t forget to use Sword Mode not just for mobility but also for its defensive functions as well.

In this game, it’s crucial to understand that charging doesn’t restrict you to Axe Mode. Therefore, it’s important to quickly charge during combos too. To maximize your offense, strive to enter Power Axe Mode with Element Boost activated and a good supply of phials prepared.

Make sure you can quickly charge while attacking in different modes. For the best results, aim to activate Power Axe Mode with an active Element Boost and plenty of charged phials ready for action!

How to Perfect Guard and perform Charge Blade Power Clashes in MH Wilds

With our offensive strategies now set, let’s shift our attention to the fundamentals of defense – essentially learning how to defend, execute Perfect Guards, and initiate Power Clashes. You’ll find it relatively straightforward as defending can be done by merely holding R2/RT when in Sword mode, while Perfect Guarding requires a quick input at the exact moment your adversary’s attack is about to strike you. Unlike conventional guarding, a Perfect Guard won’t deplete your weapon’s sharpness and will nullify all damage inflicted.

In contrast, the Power Clashes are activated exclusively when you repeatedly defend against specific attacks with a Perfect Guard. Since this activation is reliable, I advise not to intentionally attempt it but rather view it as an added benefit for maintaining a strong defense. Avoid taking unneeded risks in the process.
