How to catch a Gravid Bowfin in Monster Hunter Wilds

In the thrilling world of Monster Hunter Wilds, I’ve come across one elusive catch – the Gravid Bowfin. This is no ordinary Bowfin; it’s a rarity that’s hard to come by. Completing my collection and finishing a string of fishing sidequests hidden deep within the Forest depends on finding this rare gem.

Over time, if you’re an experienced angler, the Gravid Bowfin might seem easy to locate at first glance. However, due to its growing scarcity, you could spend hours searching without success unless you pick your search location strategically. It can be found in virtually any body of water, but our experience shows that only specific regions and fishing techniques offer a reasonable chance of catching one.

How to find a Gravid Bowfin in Monster Hunter Wilds

Fishing for Flavor side quest

In the forest, make your way towards Area 12, where you’ll find a substantial body of water lying to the northeastern side. This area often witnesses a bustling activity, which we refer to as a feeding frenzy. It’s easily recognizable due to the circle of disturbed water caused by large creatures. These are special pools teeming with fish, particularly the ones where we’ve had our greatest success catching the Gravid Bowfin.

If you’ve finished other fishing-related tasks, make sure you have an Emerald Jig lure handy, as the Gravid Bowfin is drawn to it. To switch your bait to the Emerald Jig, press L1/LT on your controller and navigate through the menu at the bottom right until you find the appropriate button. Keep holding the Fishing Rod while doing this.

In simpler terms, when the lure is set, cast your line into the water body, and you’ll likely catch a variety of fish species swiftly, from Sushi Fish to big ones like whoppers. However, remember that this area has small dangerous creatures lurking around, so they might attack you unexpectedly, interrupting your fishing. Therefore, it’s a good idea to always carry some Dung Bombs with you, as they can help get rid of larger dangerous creatures when necessary.

In some instances, you may find that the Gravid Bowfin and the Feeding Frenzy are absent in the Forest. If this occurs, you have a couple of options:

1. Depart from the Forest area.
2. Adjust the season to trigger new spawns.
3. Head to two alternative regions within the Forest where the Gravid Bowfin might be present.

In Area 12, you’ll find a cave nearby that’s home to some uncommon fish species. You might even catch them using your Capture Net. Alternatively, you could trek up to Area 16’s forest peak where there are abundant fishing spots to snag the Gravid Bowfin and other rarities such as the giant squid.

Since you’ll frequently visit the Forest for Endemic and Aquatic Life missions, it would be wise to familiarize yourself with the surroundings and take some time to explore during your visits.
