In the game series titled Monster Hunter, you’ll undoubtedly find yourself engaging in numerous monster hunts. They can be found everywhere, from herds to Apex monsters, subspecies, and any other form you might imagine. To make things even more intriguing, Monster Hunter Wilds introduces an additional category – Guardians. These new creatures are somewhat special and exclusive, only appearing within the Ruins of Wyveria.
Among the initial Guardians you’ll encounter, the Rathalos Guardian stands out as one of the toughest. They aren’t exactly welcoming to intruders in their territory. As there are no other Rathalos for comparison at this point, facing off against the Guardian form can be a truly daunting experience, but not an insurmountable challenge. Here’s how to conquer them and all the loot they offer.
The first big boss you fight is Rathalos Guardian. They don’t like strangers in their area. Since there are no other Rathalos to compare it with, fighting this special version can be scary, but not impossible to beat. Here’s how to defeat them and the treasures they have.
Guardian Rathalos – Strengths And Weaknesses
In the game, Guardians differ from other monsters in an interesting way. Although they engage in combat similarly to their original counterparts, they incorporate numerous alterations tailored specifically for Wyveria’s unique ecosystem. As a result, even if you’re familiar with battling the originals, the Guardians have some unexpected strategies waiting to surprise you.
When battling a Guardian, such as Rathalos, always consider your surroundings. Notably, they possess the ability to create enormous explosions in pools of Wylkcrystals, and can even heal their injuries. To ensure the fight doesn’t prolong unnecessarily, it’s crucial to stay active and engaged throughout.
- Weak Point – Mouth, Legs
- Elemental/Ailment Weaknesses – Dragon, Thunder (for the legs). Susceptible to every ailment except Poison and Exhaust.
- Elemental/Ailment Strengths – Poison, Exhaust, Fire. The Tail is immune to Water and Ice as well.
- Best Weapon Damage – All weapons equally viable.
It’s fortunate that Rathalos, the Guardian, has multiple vulnerabilities for you to exploit. For instance, their head and legs are weak spots, making them vulnerable in those areas. Moreover, they can be affected by almost any status condition. This implies that any build can be effective against them. Remember to carry some flash bombs to help bring them down from the sky when needed.
As a gamer, I’ve found that dealing damage to dragons with dragon-type weapons is definitely the best approach, but
Best Equipment To Fight Guardian Rathalos
The mighty Rathalos guardian possesses the ability to inflict both Fire and Dragon damage, with Fire damage being more frequent in their assaults. However, it’s the explosions from Wylkcrystal triggers that mostly deal Dragon damage. Since Dragon Resistance gear is scarce at this stage of the game, a good alternative investment would be the Nu Udra set due to its high Fire Resistance at this point in the adventure.
As a gamer, when it comes to weapon choices for a status build, anything will do as long as it steers clear of poison. However, if you don’t have a Dragon weapon, then a Thunder one is your next best bet!
Guardian Rathalos – Fight Breakdown And Moves
Just as the standard Rathalos is swift and spends most of its battle time airborne, the same goes for the Guardian Rathalos. This makes them difficult to hit unless you use Flash Bombs to bring them down. To add to their agility, they are also quite fierce with their claws, ready to dive towards you at any moment. Furthermore, when in Wylkcrystals, the Guardian version has the ability to cause massive explosions. So, be mindful of your positioning during the fight.
A significant contrast between an ordinary Rathalos and a Guardian Rathalos lies in the fact that the latter lacks the venomous talons found on the regular one.
Here is just about every move Guardian Rathalos can perform, and how best to counter it:
Move | Description | Counter |
---|---|---|
Hovering Fireball | Rathalos hovers in place for a moment before releasing a powerful fireball. | This is best avoided by staying close to Rathalos. If it is a charged fireball, keep some distance so you’re not caught in the area of impact. |
Hovering Tail Swipe | While flying, Rathalos whips ahead of them to knock away hunters. | This can be easily blocked or dodged, so try to time your defense with the attack, or simply move away when you see it coming. |
Descending Stomp | Rathalos preps their claws and dives to the ground. They may claw ahead of themself before completing the dive. This attack will explode Wylkcrystals. | Offset attacks are great here to counter them, though be especially careful you don’t time it poorly when over Wylkcrystals. |
Firestream | While flying, Rathalos will swing in a circle while breathing fire. | Rathalos breathes in a circle all around them, though not underneath. As such, stand right under them to avoid this attack entirely. |
Chomp | Rathalos will bite multiple times at the hunter in front of them while advancing slightly. | They can hold this run for quite a while, so dodging is difficult. Try an Offset attack or blocking instead. |
Swoop | Rathalos will slash at you with their claws as they fly past multiple times. | This isn’t too hard to avoid, though can be performed quite quickly. Always be mindful if you see them flying towards you. |
Grounded Fireball | While grounded, Rathalos will spit out a fireball. This can be multiple weaker ones, or a single powerful one that explodes on impact. | This is a standard attack when they’ve been grounded for a while, though they stay quite stationary during it, giving you plenty of time to assault their head. |
It’s obvious that most of Guardian Rathalos’ assaults are carried out from the air, which makes Flash Bombs crucial for neutralizing a significant portion of the danger they pose. However, even when they’re on the ground, they remain formidable opponents, so be mindful of their more potent attacks.
Guardian Rathalos – Drops And Materials
With Guardian Rathalos, not only do you get the usual assortment of materials, but many can also be gathered from shattered and detached fragments. Interestingly, a significant number of its materials are more commonly obtained by damaging and destroying Wounds during combat, so focus on that when engaging them in battle.

As the Plate isn’t upgraded, it has a higher chance to be obtained by hunting Low rank Guardian Rathalos instead due to its lower rarity.
