As a dedicated Destiny 2 gamer with countless hours under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of frustration and excitement all at once when it comes to the new Cyst missions in The Final Shape. On one hand, Bungie has once again outdone themselves by creating engaging, intricate activities that offer unique challenges and rewards. But on the other hand, accessing these missions is a confusing and seemingly arbitrary process.
In Destiny 2’s Pale Heart, Cyst missions represent a fresh activity akin to Lost Sectors. Upon The Final Shape expansion release, there are initially six of these Cyst missions to accomplish. However, only a third of this number, specifically three, will be visible on the map at any given time. To access the remaining three hidden missions, simply switch to them manually within the Cyst mission menu.
How to unlock Cyst missions
In Destiny 2: The Final Shape, reaching the Cyst missions isn’t a simple or clear-cut process. To begin, you must finish Micah-10’s solo quests named Alone in the Dark to unlock the Cyst missions. Following this step, remember to manually adjust the Cyst missions. This becomes essential if you aim to obtain Khvostov 7G-0X and missed the Lost Encryption Bits during your initial playthrough.
How to change Cyst missions
After completing all six Alone in the Dark missions, you’ll find three Cyst missions on your map in distinct areas. Interestingly, each of these locations can be interchanged between two missions. You may have observed that Searing Light and Slayer take place in the same cave, while Sword Dance and Moth-Infested Cavern share the same spot, and Smothering Darkness and Aerial Ace utilize the identical location.
To switch out the Cyst mission for another one, find and engage with a phantom bird. Approach the bird to receive the “Activate Cyst” prompt. The bird will indicate which mission will take its place after this interaction. These birds can be found close to the exit points of the areas. After changing missions, follow the tunnels to locate the desired Cyst (keep an eye on the map for its new entrance location). If you wish to make another swap, you must leave and return to the area.
The bird in The Landing is on the blue crystals by the tunnel that leads to the Refraction.
A bird sits atop the rocks situated beneath a big tree, not far from the tunnel granting access to The Seclusion.
The bird in The Impasse is on the ledge that leads to The Transgression.
As a dedicated Destiny 2 player with countless hours spent exploring its vast universe, I can confidently say that the Cyst missions are an exciting new addition to the game. However, I must admit that unlocking them and navigating between them isn’t as straightforward as it could be. Nevertheless, with this insider knowledge, you’ll be one step closer to obtaining some fantastic new Exotics or completing elusive Triumphs.
