How the Chicago Med season 9 finale will play into season 10 (and more to know)

As a dedicated fan who’s been through the rollercoaster of emotions that comes with following Chicago Med, I can confidently say that the season 9 finale left me reeling! The cliffhangers were tantalizing, the character arcs intriguing, and the suspense palpable.

Just like other NBC series, “Chicago Med” experienced a truncated ninth season due to Hollywood strikes, concluding in May. For the upcoming season 10, we can anticipate a return to its standard 22 episodes. With some major twists in the finale, here’s what fans should recall before the next season starts and what exciting developments await us in the new year!

What happened in the Chicago Med season 9 finale?

Riley and Charles had a disagreement concerning a patient with mental health issues, as Charles was preoccupied by the fact that Liliana’s brother, Pawel, had filed a baseless lawsuit against the hospital. Eventually, Goodwin realized that her father, Burt, was no longer capable of living independently and placed him in an assisted living home. Archer found himself dealing with a former drug addict who had relapsed, which triggered some unpleasant recollections, while Maggie and Dr. Johnson were growing closer.

In a poignant moment, Crockett was deeply affected when a man took his own life following a failed surgery to save his son. This tragic event stirred up past wounds for Crockett, causing him to abandon a scheduled operation. The climax saw Pawel being admitted to the hospital, battered and accusing Ripley as the assailant. However, Ripley remained silent in response.

Who isn’t returning?

The significant change is that Dominic Rains is no longer part of the series. This development aligns with the narrative since Crockett appeared visibly distressed by those losses and could benefit from some time away from the hospital. As a result, his exit can be plausibly written off as either resigning or taking an extended leave.

Additionally, there’s a backstage shift happening in the production, as the long-standing showrunners, Diane Frolov and Andy Schneider, who have been in charge since the series premiere, are no longer at the helm. Instead, Allen MacDonald has taken on the role of the new showrunner.

Who’s joining Chicago Med?

The first episode back will present two significant characters: Sarah Ramos steps into the role of Dr. Caitlin Lenox, who’s moving from a hospital that recently shut down. According to TVLine, MacDonald describes her character as strictly adhering to regulations and attempting to take charge of various aspects of the Emergency Department, which doesn’t sit well with Dr. Archer.

In the meantime, Darren Barnet takes on the role of Dr. John Frost, a pediatrician from a shuttered hospital. He’ll transport one of his patients to work alongside Maggie. Furthermore, Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut reappears as Dr. Naomi Howard, who carries on as Archer’s intern. Lastly, keep an eye out for more appearances by John Earl Jelks, portraying Sharon’s boyfriend, Dr. Dennis Washington.

What’s coming for season 10?

The opening of the season is marred by a major catastrophe, with a boating accident taking place at the renowned Navy Pier in Chicago. On his first day, Dr. Lenox faces a challenging situation as he tends to the casualties, with the hospital already struggling due to an influx of patients from a closed facility.

Ripley remains silent about the matter involving Pawel, potentially straining his bond with both Hannah and Charles. Maggie and Loren are now a couple, but they may encounter obstacles as Maggie works through the void left by Burt; fortunately, Washington is there to offer Sharon comfort during this time.

Anticipate the customary blend of dramatic incidents and health crises, as Chicago Med gears up for its notable 10th season, which will undoubtedly continue to captivate viewers.

Chicago Med season 10 premieres Wednesday, September 24 at 8/7c on NBC.
