As a die-hard fan eagerly anticipating the upcoming chapters in the DC Universe (DCU), I can’t help but get excited about the unique takes on iconic characters like Superman and Supergirl. In my recent chats, James Gunn revealed some intriguing differences between Milly Alcock’s portrayal of Kara Zor-El/Supergirl and David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman. With Superman already gracing our screens on July 11, 2025, and Supergirl set to join the scene soon, I can hardly wait to see how these two powerhouses will shape the first chapter of DCU: Gods and Monsters!
James Gunn on differences between Superman and Supergirl
In a surprising turn of events, Milly Alcock unexpectedly appears as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl near the finale of 2025’s Superman. Upon entering the Fortress of Solitude to retrieve Krypto, who she had temporarily given to her cousin, she seems intoxicated.
This short sequence underscores the distinct portrayal of Supergirl compared to Corenswet’s Superman, as highlighted during an interview with ScreenRant. James Gunn acknowledged that the current iteration of Supergirl is disorganized within the DC Universe, and further emphasized that this specific version of the character will be featured in Craig Gillespie’s adaptation of Supergirl.
In simpler terms, Gunn stated that while Superman has a privileged background with loving parents, the character he’s referring to had a significantly tougher upbringing. As a result, they’ve turned out differently from their cousin.
The “unique upbringing” or “different background” that Clark Kent had was possibly suggested by the entire contents of the message that Superman’s natural parents, Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van, left for him before his arrival on Earth. Initially, Clark found motivation from the initial section of the damaged message.
Initially, it was discovered that he came to Earth with the mission to subdue the planet and resurrect the Kryptonians by bonding with numerous partners. Despite the shocking disclosure, Clark found solace in his past as a Kansas farm boy’s son. Given her upbringing on Krypton before departing, it’s understandable that Kara, who had known only Kryptonian life, would have differing perspectives from Clark.
DCU’s Supergirl debuts in US theaters on June 26, 2026.
