How Robert Downey Jr. Saved Tom Holland’s First MCU Scene in Civil War

As a fan who has grown up watching the Marvel Cinematic Universe unfold, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of gratitude for the camaraderie and mentorship that seems to permeate through its cast, particularly between Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr.

Tom Holland recently shared the story about how Robert Downey Jr. helped him salvage his initial Scene as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War.

What did Tom Holland say about his MCU debut in Civil War with Robert Downey Jr.?

During an interview on the Rich Roll podcast, Holland discussed his Marvel debut as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Civil War. His initial scene was alongside Downey’s character, Tony Stark/Iron Man. Holland reminisced about the impressive screen test he did with Downey to win the part.

Holland expressed his heartfelt thanks to Downey. During his screen test, he had a lengthy eight-page dialogue scene. It was quite challenging. However, things went smoothly. His agent instructed him to memorize the lines word for word. When it came to filming my first take with Downey, he unexpectedly started ad-libbing and altering everything. This allowed me to respond freely along with him.

During the filming of Civil War, directors Joe and Anthony Russo decided to shorten by more than three-quarters a particular scene involving Downey. However, Downey strongly opposed this reduction and successfully advocated for the entire scene to remain in the final cut of the movie.

Upon arriving at the filming location after landing the role, I found out that my scene had been drastically reduced from what I’d performed during the audition,” Holland clarified. “It was now only about two pages long. Downey then asked, ‘Where did they take out all of the kid’s lines?’

As a devoted fan, I’d rephrase it like this: “Downey was the one who convinced me, ‘You’ll find yourself drawn to this project. Let’s film the entire audition process. You can always edit it later, but you’ll be glad you have it.’ And they did use every bit of it. I owe him a debt of gratitude for that insight. It’s pretty amazing.

Holland expressed his eagerness to assist the live-action Miles Morales should the opportunity arise, much like Downey did for him.
