How Long AEW Has Been Planning MJF vs. Will Ospreay

As an ardent AEW fan with years of wrestling fandom under my belt, I must say the upcoming showdown between MJF and Will Ospreay at All In is nothing short of a dream match for many of us! The build-up to this event has been captivating, filled with unexpected twists and turns that have kept fans on the edge of their seats.

Next month at All In, the reigning AEW International Champion, Maxwell Jacob Friedman (MJF), will be defending his title against Will Ospreay. The rivalry between MJF and Will Ospreay started during an episode of AEW Dynamite on June 26, when MJF was involved in a segment with Daniel Garcia.

At All In, MJF suggested a possible bout with Garcia, but those plans were disrupted when Will Ospreay stepped in. Instead, Ospreay declared his title defense against Garcia, effectively overshadowing MJF’s initial proposal. The interaction concluded with a tense moment of eye contact between MJF and Ospreay.

After Ospreay successfully defended his title against Daniel Garcia, an unforeseen sequence of events transpired. Following the bout, MJF suddenly assaulted Garcia, causing him to bleed. Even though Ospreay tried to help Garcia, the harm had already been inflicted.

As a longtime wrestling fan with over two decades of fandom under my belt, I must admit that the rivalry between MJF and Ospreay has been one of the most electrifying feuds I’ve witnessed in recent years. Having attended countless shows and followed the industry closely, I can confidently say that their clash on the 250th edition of AEW Dynamite was nothing short of phenomenal.

Last week on AEW Dynamite, I was thrilled to learn that I’d get to see MJF defend his title against Ospreay at AEW All In! It’s intriguing because, at first, there were hints of a potential match between MJF and Garcia. But as the news unfolds, it seems the MJF and Ospreay program has been in the making for quite some time now.

Will Ospreay vs. MJF at AEW All In was planned for months

According to Fightful Select’s report (which requires payment for access), AEW had been plotting the MJF vs. Will Ospreay match at All In for quite some time, long before Ospreay’s title fight against Swerve Strickland at Forbidden Door. Initially, they were considering a one-hour duel between Ospreay and Maxwell as a build-up to their All In encounter. However, AEW eventually opted for a summer-long feud instead. The return of the former AEW World Champion at Double Or Nothing in May was part of this pre-planned storyline.

Last week’s Dynamite saw a shocking moment as Maxwell tossed the International Championship into the trash. Also, he unveiled the new championship called the AEW American Championship.

It’s been observed that this action was part of a calculated strategy aimed at intensifying pressure on Maxwell prior to AEW All In in London. Additionally, the organization intends to elevate the status of the International Championship by fueling this rivalry.

Next month at All In, MJF will battle it out with Ospreay to defend his American Championship in an eagerly awaited rematch. Additionally, The Salt of the Earth will challenge for his title against Templario at CMLL’s Arena Mexico on August 2nd, and Michael Oku in Rev Pro on the 11th of the same month.
