How Jurassic World Rebirth’s D-Rex Monster Was Inspired by Star Wars

Now that “Jurassic World: Rebirth” has hit theaters, fans are delving into the origins of its fearsome new dinosaur. One intriguing aspect is the surprising “Star Wars” influence on the design of the movie’s D-Rex, a genetically-modified predator who plays a crucial role in the plot.

Boba Fett’s ride was used to create Jurassic World Rebirth’s D-Rex

Jurassic World Rebirth introduced a novel antagonistic dinosaur known as the D-Rex (Latin for “Twisted King”), which is a genetically modified mutation derived from the T-Rex genetic code. Director Gareth Edwards admitted that the design of the D-Rex was partly influenced by the Rancor, a creature found in Star Wars, as well as Boba Fett’s mount, and another Star Wars creature. During an interview with Collider, Edwards shared, “We incorporated a touch of the Rancor from Star Wars, but don’t let those working on Star Wars know about it.

As a gamer, I’d say: “I control this monstrous creature known as the D-Rex, boasting a colossal head, six powerful limbs, and a movement style eerily reminiscent of an ape. It’s not just about looking fearsome; it can walk and hunt simultaneously. Some fans might draw comparisons to the Xenomorph from Alien, but the Rancor was actually the design inspiration. This behemoth made its first appearance on Ile Saint-Hubert, an InGen site where early cross-species experiments took place, as depicted in Jurassic Park.

Universal Pictures’ promotional content highlights the awe-inspiring and fearsome look of the D-Rex. As per Edwards, the task was to devise a monster concept, which prompted the design team to merge various inspirations, one of them being the creature from Star Wars. This link introduces an imaginative layer connecting different franchises, considering that Edwards previously helmed Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

In Jurassic World: Rebirth, the D-Rex serves as the main antagonist for a secretive expedition led by Zora Bennett (played by Scarlett Johansson). This team embarks on a journey to gather dinosaur DNA for a potential medical remedy, but their plans are disrupted when genetically altered creatures on the island disrupt their mission. Alongside Johansson, the movie features Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey, Rupert Friend, Luna Blaise, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as well.

The movie premiered in U.S. theaters on July 2, 2025.
