As a seasoned Outlander fanatic who’s navigated the turbulent waters of time travel more times than I can count (or care to remember), it’s no surprise that Roger recognized Geillis when she stepped through the stones. It was the same familiar face from the past, albeit under a different name – Gillian. The memories might have been hazy for some, but not for us die-hards who’ve rewatched this masterpiece more times than we care to admit during Droughtlander.
In the captivating world of Outlander’s seventh season, as I found myself watching episode 9 unfold, a moment took my breath away – Geillis stepping through the door. But how could this be when Roger had never encountered her in that era before? The answer lies in the extraordinary power of time travel!
There’s a strong possibility you’ve watched all seasons of Outlander repeatedly during the long gaps between episodes, don’t you? That seems to be a common habit among avid fans of the show, right? However, we understand that not everyone might choose to rewatch their favorite series. This can sometimes cause confusion about plot developments and character interactions.
In simpler terms, the last appearance of Geillis was in ‘Outlander’ season 3, but at that time, Roger wasn’t present in the past. However, their encounter between Roger and Geillis actually takes us back to the finale of ‘Outlander’ season 2.
Roger met Geillis in 1968 in Outlander
If you’re not recalling, it might be because you’ve misplaced the fact that Roger and Gillian (Geillis’ real name) first encountered each other in 1968, during the time when Claire and Brianna visited Roger to express their sympathies following the deceased Reverend Wakefield’s off-screen passing, which occurred in Inverness.
Claire revealed to Bree and Roger that she could travel through time and had married Jamie Fraser in the past. Initially, Bree found it hard to believe this claim. As Bree was grappling with her own identity, discovering that the man who brought her up wasn’t her true father, it’s understandable that she felt confused and needed some time to process. This confusion led Bree to attend one of Gillian’s rallies supporting the White Rose of Scotland – an effort advocating for Jacobite rule.
When Claire discovers that Geillis is in Inverness during 1968, she feels compelled to alert the woman about what lies ahead. Her intention is to shield Geillis from the burning at her witch trial, as she now believes Geillis had been falsely accused and executed for witchcraft. Moreover, Claire realizes that Geillis and Dougal’s child was a distant relative of Roger, so she confides in Roger about where Reverend Wakefield’s family tree contained errors and shares more details about Gillian.
Roger eventually encounters Gillian from the past, yet their encounter is fleeting. It’s significant enough for Roger to recall her features. Naturally, he won’t forget the woman who journeyed through the stones after killing her husband.
Roger knows how Geillis and Buck are connected in Outlander
Roger isn’t merely focused on Geillis overall; he’s aware that she has a pattern of marrying men and then losing them, yet she also possesses healing abilities. However, it’s the relationship between Geillis and Buck that raises concerns for him.
Geillis has a son named Buck, but she’s unaware of this pregnancy yet. As the promotional content suggests, Geillis and Dougal haven’t crossed paths yet, so they’re both in the dark about what lies ahead. Since Geillis accepts time travel, it wouldn’t be wise for Roger to reveal Buck’s existence to her just yet, as things could become very complicated.
Roger finds himself tasked with handling the complex dynamics arising from the tension between Buck and Geillis, all while contemplating the implications of these events for the days ahead. Earlier, he had pondered the repercussions should Buck meet his end; but now, he wonders what might transpire if there’s discord between them.
