A Man on the Inside creator on recapturing the magic of The Mole Agent
In a recent conversation with ComingSoon, Schur discussed his experience attempting to rekindle the charm of The Mole Agent, an Oscar-nominated docuseries that influenced Netflix’s A Man on the Inside series. He emphasized that integrating the significant issues addressed in the documentary was crucial for the creative team, as it helped maintain the essence of the original content.
Schur stated that the documentary was unusually captivating. This is due to its humorous premise initially, but as it progresses, it delves deeply into some very serious topics related to aging, memory loss, death, and everyday challenges faced by individuals in their seventies, eighties, and nineties.
In our creative process, we aimed to create a series that would evoke the same emotions as the original documentary. This was our guiding principle throughout the writing sessions. We wanted viewers to experience similar feelings while watching the show as they did when they saw the documentary. To achieve this, we didn’t shy away from tackling heavy themes like memory loss, death, complex relationships, and aging. Even while trying to be humorous, we felt it was essential to confront these serious subjects head-on in our adaptation.
