As a devoted fan of House of the Dragon, I am thrilled to share my excitement about the latest developments in Rhaenyra Targaryen’s dragon riders and their magnificent beasts. Having closely followed the series thus far, I can’t help but be captivated by the rich history and intrigue surrounding these powerful creatures and their human counterparts.

Towards the finale of “House of the Dragon” Season 2’s second-to-last episode, Team Black, led by Rhaenyra, welcomes three fresh dragon riders. Curiosity is piqued among viewers as they eagerly anticipate learning the names of each dragon and its corresponding rider within Rhaenyra’s camp.

In simple terms, this is a comprehensive overview of the dragons and their riders that are part of Rhaenyra Targaryen’s military force.

After bringing on board Addam, Hugh, and Ulf, the balance has significantly shifted in favor of the Blacks. By Season 2 Episode 7, Rhaenyra’s forces boast at least seven flying dragons, leaving the Greens with a meager three, one of which – Sunfyre – is injured and unable to fly for an extended period. This shift comes after the losses of Arrax, Lucerys Velaryon, Meleys, and Rhaenys Targaryen among the Blacks during the ongoing conflict.

Rhaenyra Targaryen rides Syrax

Rhaenyra was the first to tame and name her dragon Syrax when they were both young. According to George R.R. Martin’s book, Syrax became Rhaenyra’s mount after she bestowed it with its name, suggesting that they had formed an unbreakable bond from the start.

Addam of Hull rides Seasmoke

Near the close of the sixth episode in Season 2, Seasmoke discovers Addam of Hull, an illegitimate son of Corlys Velaryon, and takes him under his protection. In the seventh episode, Addam pledges loyalty to Rhaenyra.

Hugh Hammer rides Vermithor

In episode 7, there are strong hints that Hugh is the offspring of Saera Targaryen, who is the daughter of Jaehaerys I and Queen Alysanne Targaryen. Saera lived in a pleasure house in King’s Landing despite her noble background. Hugh is wedded, and regrettably, his daughter, whom we have previously seen, has perished. In the Dance of the Dragons era, Vermithor, the dragon that Hugh eventually lays claim to, becomes the second largest dragon on the planet, following Vhagar. So, in simpler terms, episode 7 suggests that Saera is Hugh’s mother, who lived in a King’s Landing pleasure house despite her high status. Hugh is married and has lost his daughter, and Vermithor, which was previously ridden by his grandfather, is now the second biggest dragon alive.

Ulf the White rides Silverwing

Ulf, similar to Hugh, hails from the series’ King’s Landing. He asserts that he is the illegitimate offspring of Baelon Targaryen, who fathered Viserys I and Daemon. However, these allegations have not been substantiated yet. While attempting to flee Vermithor during the Red Sowing, Ulf ventured further into the caverns and stumbled upon Silverwing’s den. The former dragon of Queen Alysanne then claimed him.

Jacaerys Velaryon rides Vermax

As a young boy, Jacaerys received a dragon egg. Once the egg hatched, Jacaerys emerged as its rider.

Daemon Targaryen rides Caraxes

In the story, Daemon ranks as the second rider on the dragon Caraxes, which is described as being smaller than Vhagar. Previously, Aemon Targaryen, father of Rhaenys, had been Caraxes’ mount.

Baela Velaryon rides Moondancer

Baela Targaryen, commonly referred to as Baela Velaryon, holds the title of Moondancer’s first rider. This young dragon is renowned for its remarkable speed, making it exceptional both on land and in flight, which may be attributed to Baela’s youth.

Small dragons and future riders

In addition to the previously mentioned dragons, the Black faction is accompanied by Stormcloud and Tyraxes. These dragons are linked to Aegon III and Joffrey Velaryon respectively. However, due to their young age, they are not yet big enough to participate in the initial phases of the Dance of the Dragons conflict.

Honorable Mention: Rhaena Targaryen rides Sheepstealer

Based on the current development in the show, Rhaena seems to be taking on the role of Sheepstealer’s rider. However, in the source material, it is Nettles, another dragonseed character, who mounts this particular horse.
