House of the Dragon: Is Nettles Being Cut & Left Out of the TV Show?

As a dedicated fan who has read the Fire & Ice books multiple times, I must say that the potential exclusion of Nettles from House of the Dragon is leaving me feeling like I’ve been roasted by Sheepstealer himself!

Spectators are curious if the character Nettles might have been left out or removed from the series House of the Dragon. This speculation arises after the fantasy drama show seems to suggest her absence through hints. These hints point towards Rhaena Targaryen potentially being responsible for taming the wild dragon Sheepstealer, a task that Nettles performs skillfully in the books.

It appears that Nettles won’t be included or featured in House of the Dragon’s third season, and here’s why:

Has Nettles been cut from House of the Dragon?

It is currently unconfirmed if Nettles has been cut from House of the Dragon.

Additionally, series creator Ryan Condal has remained vague about Nettles’ involvement in the series, declining to give a clear answer when questioned about it during an interview with Variety. In the same conversation, he stated:

“I haven’t formed an opinion about any details not already revealed about that character in the series.”

It seems that the creators might have eliminated or merged Nettles’ character with Rhaena in House of the Dragon Season 2, as suggested by the focus on Rhaena Targaryen in the storyline about a dragon from the Vale, which appears to be Sheepstealer.

In George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Ice series, Rhaena plays no role in the storyline involving Sheepstealer. Instead, she develops a connection with a dragon named Morning, who hatches during the Dance of the Dragons. Contrarily, it is Nettles who discovers and trains Sheepstealer. Nettles manages to win its trust by offering it freshly slaughtered sheep daily, a method that proves effective in bonding with the dragon. Eventually, Nettles achieves success where Silver Denys and Alyn of Hull had failed.

Why Nettles may not appear in House of the Dragon Season 3?

It’s possible that nettles won’t feature in House of the Dragon Season 3. The creators might be choosing to omit her storyline or possibly blend it with Rhaena Targaryen’s instead.

In the end, it’s uncertain if Nettles will be part of the series or if her character will be scaled down. This uncertainty arises as the show seems to be eliminating or diminishing important book characters such as Cregan Stark and Sara Snow.

Currently available for streaming on HBO Max, the second season of House of the Dragon showcases a stellar cast including Matt Smith, Fabien Frankel, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Steve Toussaint, and several other talented individuals.
