As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and skepticism when it comes to Horizon Online. Having witnessed the rise and fall of many live-service games, I’ve learned to approach such announcements with a grain of salt.
In the year 2022, Sony declared their intention to release 12 live-service games by the year 2025. However, as we stand now, this target has not been met, and some of their endeavors in this area have actually tarnished their reputation (Concord). Yet, they continue to strive towards achieving a successful live service game. Could a multiplayer Horizon game be the solution they’re seeking?
Horizon Online releasing ahead of Horizon 3, as Sony prioritizes pivot to live-service
In a recent appearance on the Spawn Wave podcast, renowned gaming journalist Jason Schreier shared some intriguing insights. It appears that Horizon Online, the upcoming multiplayer game, has become Sony’s top priority over the next single-player installment in the Horizon series. This multiplayer title is set to launch ahead of its single-player counterpart as part of Sony’s efforts to establish a stronger presence within the live-service gaming market.
Horizon Online is their next product, not the third single-player game […] it’s live service games all around. Horizon is one of the few ones that hasn’t been cancelled or hasn’t come out and flopped the way Concord did and so…yeah, a lot of questions. A lot of people are working on that.”
To date, the live-service venture hasn’t fared well. While Hell Divers had an impressive debut, Concord turned out to be a disaster, the multiplayer endeavor based on The Last of Us universe was axed, and it seems Marathon is destined for failure.
Given its popularity, there’s undeniably a significant expectation for Horizon Online to thrive. We truly wish it does well, but due to its unique gameplay style that doesn’t seem ideally suited for multiplayer, and the fact that it’s not an IP with unwavering market power, it’s challenging to be overly optimistic about its prospects.
For now, all we can do is await further leaks. Are you excited about Horizon Online?
