As a gamer with a deep interest in true crime stories, I can’t help but be fascinated by the tragic and intriguing case of Mickey Thompson and his wife Trudy’s murders. Growing up, I have always been drawn to investigative mysteries and the complexities of human behavior. This story, in particular, piqued my interest because it was a real-life event that remained unsolved for over a decade.
On March 16, 1988, in their California home driveway, Mickey Thompson and his wife Trudy were brutally shot and killed by unidentified attackers. The couple reportedly suffered fatal gunshot wounds in what appeared to be an execution-style assassination. Witnesses claimed they saw two African American men at the scene, but they fled after committing the crime. Despite a thorough investigation by law enforcement, the case went unsolved for nearly 13 years. However, in time, police arrested Michael Goodwin and charged him with planning the murders of Mickey Thompson and his spouse.
Based on the true crime series “Homicide: Los Angeles,” it is reported that Mickey and Trudy Thompson were found deceased in their driveway. The couple were attempting to leave their home when they were ambushed by two armed men, as detailed in the court records. Witnesses asserted that one gunman targeted Mickey while the other aimed at Trudy. One observer declared that the assailant continued begging for Trudy’s wife before fatally shooting her.
At first, it was assumed that the robbers intended to target the couple for their valuables. But this theory didn’t hold up when authorities found money on Mickey Thompson and undisturbed jewelry on Trudy Thompson. The incident was subsequently classified as an assassination, leading police to launch a thorough investigation. For over a decade, they searched for the perpetrator without success, until in 2001 when they made a significant breakthrough. As per reports, Michael Goodwin was taken into custody and charged with conspiring to commit murder.
Who was drag racer Mickey Thompson & his wife Trudy’s killer?
During the probe, two eyewitnesses informed the law enforcement that they spotted two unidentified men in a car near Mickey Thompson’s neighborhood. According to People Magazine, these witnesses acknowledged Michael Goodwin as one of the men seen in the vehicle. Additionally, they mentioned that both individuals were observed using binoculars towards Mickey Thompson’s residence.
In November 2006, six weeks were dedicated to the trial of the 1988 murder case involving Goodwin. Witnesses appeared during this time and shared their accounts of what transpired on that fateful day. Furthermore, it emerged from true crime series that Goodwin may have had a reason to take Thompson’s life. Previously, Homicide: Los Angeles documented that Thompson and Goodwin engaged in a professional association for an extended period. However, their relationship deteriorated, leading them into a legal dispute, which Thompson won. The fallout from this led Goodwin to file for bankruptcy shortly afterward.
In January 2007, a jury determined that Michael Goodwin was responsible for the planning of the murders of Mickey Thompson and Trudy Thompson. According to the Los Angeles Times, he was sentenced to two consecutive life terms without the chance for parole. Yet, the individuals who pulled the trigger on Mickey and his wife remain unidentified up until now.
Homicide: Los Angeles is available to stream on Netflix.
