As a fan of true crime documentaries and someone who closely follows the criminal justice system, I was both intrigued and saddened by the story of Lana Clarkson and her killer, Phil Spector. The first episode of Homicide: Los Angeles, “Hunting Phil Spector,” brought back memories of this notorious case that captured the world’s attention over a decade ago.
Netflix debuted the true crime docuseries “Homicide: Los Angeles” on July 16, 2024. This new installation in the Homicide series, produced by Dick Wolf, focuses on investigations and prosecutions of notorious murder cases in Los Angeles. The show provides an inside look at how these crimes were solved.
In the initial installment of Homicide: Los Angeles titled “Hunting Phil Spector,” we delve into the 2003 murder case of American actress Lana Clarkson, then 40 years old. Throughout the prolonged trial that ensued, Phil Spector, the suspect, continued to claim his innocence.
Where is Lana Clarkson’s convicted killer Phil Spector now?
According to Forbes, Phil Spector, who was 81 years old, passed away in prison on January 16, 2021. At first, it was reported that he died of natural causes, but later it came to light that his death was actually due to complications from COVID-19. It’s important to note that Spector was serving a 19-year sentence for the murder of Lana Clarkson at the time of his passing.
Harvesting the name Harvey Philip Spector at birth, this man gained recognition as an accomplished record producer during the 1960s era. According to Sky News, a fateful encounter between Spector and Clarkson transpired at the House of Blues on Sunset Strip in February 2003. At that time, Clarkson worked as a hostess there. After leaving the venue together, they headed to Spector’s mansion in Alhambra, California. In the early hours of February 3rd, the driver, Adriano De Souza, was jolted awake by an unusual noise emanating from the property. Later testifying, he revealed that upon investigation, he discovered Spector brandishing a firearm and uttering, “I believe I have killed someone.” Upon the arrival of law enforcement, they unearthed Clarkson’s lifeless body seated in a chair, bearing a gunshot wound to her mouth.
Based on the information provided, I believe that Lana Clarkson’s death was not a suicide but rather a tragic and violent event at the hands of Phil Spector. The initial investigation and subsequent first trial took years to conclude with a mistrial, leaving many questions unanswered. However, it was during the second trial in 2009 that the full extent of Spector’s disturbing behavior came to light.
Spector was given a prison sentence of 19 years to life following his conviction for the second-degree murder of Lana Clarkson, according to Forbes.
Homicide: Los Angeles is currently available to watch on Netflix.
