Homeworld 3's War Games DLCs add new strategies to the roguelike mode

As a seasoned space-faring gamer with over two decades of intergalactic combat under my belt, I have to admit that Homeworld 3 has truly outdone itself with this latest update and DLC releases. The free Update 1.3 has breathed new life into the game, refining everything from unit dynamics to combat mechanics, making it a more polished and engaging experience than ever before.

Blackbird Interactive has continued its efforts on Homeworld 3 after its launch in May 2024. The team has made occasional updates to fix bugs and issues, but this season they’ve released a significant update along with two DLCs for the game’s roguelike War Games mode. While it might not appeal to those seeking more from the single-player campaign, it does significantly enhance combat mechanics. The DLC adds four new fleet strategies and tactics for players to explore in the War Games mode.

A Mothership-sized update

In Homeworld 3, a significant change is taking place with Update 1.3, which brings a comprehensive overhaul of the game’s systems for free. No additional purchases are required to experience this update, but it extensively reworks various aspects of the game, such as units, defenses, offenses, behaviors, pathfinding, combat dynamics, aesthetics, and more. Essentially, Update 1.3’s patch notes cover just about everything you can think of.

This update brought several key improvements, such as refining the behavior of different units in terms of their tactics, offensive capabilities, and defensive mechanisms, as well as their weapon systems. Notably, strike craft underwent a significant adjustment that enhances their survivability and combat effectiveness. They now have improved evasion abilities against large enemy weapons and can change direction quickly to initiate new attack runs on targets. In essence, strike craft will engage in combat for longer periods instead of wasting time or getting destroyed unnecessarily, which is advantageous for commanders seeking a more dynamic experience from Homeworld 3’s small unit game.

Additionally, you’ll find numerous enhancements, bug resolutions, and overall user-friendly upgrades that significantly improve the gaming experience compared to earlier versions. A standout addition for me was the option to segregate damaged units from undamaged ones, enabling efficient repairs of my wounded squadrons before they returned to battle. Across various aspects such as ship navigation, combat mechanics, control, and execution, there’s a noticeable improvement compared to my initial review in May. In essence, it feels more polished and enjoyable now than it did then.

War Games have a few new players

In the second half of Homeworld 3’s new content, we find the introduction of new fleets within the War Games. These are available as two separate DLCs: the Somtaaw Fleet Pack and the Taiidan Fleet Pack. Each pack offers an additional pair of fleet choices for War Games’ roguelike mode. The combined four fleets offer a variety of options, excelling in defense, long-range attacks, short-range engagements, and strike craft specialties. This diversity comes just in time for the update that boosts the effectiveness of strike craft. These DLCs can be purchased as part of the $19.99 USD Year One Content pack or individually at $7.99 each.

The Taiidan Fleets include the Taiidan Defense Fleet and Missile Destroyer Fleet. The Defense Fleet is really something interesting. Instead of specializing in any kind of offensive capabilities, this fleet excels in bringing enemies into its range and disabling them. It sports highly versatile Defender strike craft and a variety of units and Artifacts that buff the fleet’s ability to disable enemy forces and strip them down to space dust once they’re ensnared. The Missile Destroyer Fleet is much more straight forward. It trades defensive and disabling countermeasures for long-range ballistics made to kill enemies before they even arrive. It’s much simpler to handle, but still formidable, as long as you can keep enemies at range and off your Carrier.

Simultaneously, the Somtaaw Fleet Pack offers the Pilgrim Fleet and Beast Slayers Fleet as options. The Pilgrim Fleet concentrates on swift and powerful specialty strike craft to deal heavy damage quickly. Building a strong army of Heavy Acolyte Strike Craft and enhancing them will make you a relentless swarm of rapid attacks.

Homeworld 3 and a half

Blackbird Interactive has declared that DLC and Update 1.3 will serve as the final chapter for Homeworld 3. The team aimed to create a game that both series veterans and novices could appreciate, even though it may not have appealed to everyone, this free update seems like an apology to those who chose not to play Homeworld 3 or left it behind. Simultaneously, the DLC packs are entertaining. War Games has been one of the most popular aspects of Homeworld 3, and these new fleets offer a diverse range that’s intriguing to explore. If Homeworld 3 is indeed saying its last goodbye, it’s a fitting farewell, and I’m optimistic it’s just another accolade for Blackbird before moving on to something fresh and captivating.

The opinions expressed here stem from my experience with the Homeworld PC version, which had the latest update (Update 1.3) and additional DLC packs (Fleet DLC). These new features become available for download on PC on November 21st.
