The truth is clear: Snow White started off with a disappointing $43 million in domestic box office earnings, significantly lower than anticipated for a film costing $250 million to produce. The movie’s second weekend saw an alarming 66% drop – the steepest decline ever recorded among Disney live-action remakes, even surpassing the poor performances of films like Dumbo and Haunted Mansion. To add fuel to the fire, casting decisions and remarks from the film’s leading actress, Rachel Zegler, have sparked controversy, driving away segments of the audience.
A source close to Disney shared with The Mail, “As the #MeToo movement and George Floyd protests unfolded, all studios rushed to embrace progressive values. Now, five years later, everyone is scrambling for safety in Hollywood. The fear behind closed doors is palpable; it’s a fight for survival. There are growing concerns that focusing on diversity targets at the expense of storytelling may be driving away traditional viewers.
Critics of the current direction in Hollywood claim that casting decisions based on identity, such as race-swapping or gender-swapping roles, are causing audiences to lose interest. While smaller films tailored for specific demographics can thrive without controversy, the pressure to include a wide range of representations in every large production has stirred up conflict. An Oscar-nominated film producer commented, “Classic movies like The Godfather and Casablanca, which wouldn’t be eligible for nominations today due to their lack of diversity, are being replaced by films like Emilia Perez [a story about a cartel boss transitioning from male to female], that resonate only with a small group of progressive liberals.
