Following its debut at the 2025 South by Southwest Film Festival, the initial critiques for Amazon MGM Studios’ latest thriller drama titled “Holland” have surfaced. Starring Nicole Kidman, this production has garnered mixed feedback from critics, with some labeling it as “overstuffed” and “disappointing.” Nevertheless, many early responses commend the film’s main cast, particularly acknowledging Kidman’s powerful acting prowess.
In this unexpectedly suspenseful movie, Nicole Kidman plays Nancy Vandergroot, a devoted teacher and housewife who lives a seemingly idyllic life with her respected husband and son in Holland, Michigan, surrounded by beautiful tulip fields. However, the tranquility of their life takes an alarming turn when Nancy and a trustworthy colleague start to suspect a hidden secret, leading them to uncover that nothing in their lives is as it appears.
What are the Holland reviews saying about the Nicole Kidman movie?
Based on an article by Lovia Gyarkye for The Hollywood Reporter, the movie showcases impressive improvements in the director’s technique and convincing portrayals by the lead actors. Yet, despite these strong points, it seems that the storyline’s inherent confusion about its objective unfortunately undermines their efforts.
According to Glenn Garner of Deadline, Nicole Kidman’s “witty and frenetic portrayal” in the movie is beautifully reminding viewers of “the reasons they fell in love with her 30 years ago.” Furthermore, he also commended Diego Bernal for his “endearing and intense depiction as a man grappling with his own troubled past, along with his feelings towards Nancy, and the turmoil that ensues around her.
In a critique by Variety’s Peter Debruge, he lamented that the movie missed its mark, not living up to its concept and underutilizing Kidman’s talent. He remarked, “It’s unfortunate that Holland doesn’t push boundaries more in terms of the intense or over-the-top elements. A handful of genuinely outlandish scenes could have transformed this film from forgettable to mind-blowingly unique. Instead, the movie takes an unexpected twist: After the big family secret is revealed, it ends up feeling quite ordinary.
Simultaneously, Chase Hutchinson from TheWrap labels the movie as “packed too full and hard to manage.” Regardless, witnessing Kidman’s spellbinding acting skills at each instance remains a constant source of pleasure. Her performance guarantees that every change in tone, transitioning seamlessly from playfully humorous to captivatingly dark, leaves an impact.
Mimi Cave helms the movie ‘Holland,’ penned by Andrew Sodroski. The star-studded cast features Matthew Macfadyen (known for Succession), Jude Hill (from Belfast), and Gael García Bernal (recognized from Babel). They are joined by Rachel Sennott, Lennon Parham, Isaac Krasner, Jeff Pope, and Jacob Moran. In the producer’s seat are Kate Churchill, Peter Dealbert, Nicole Kidman, and Per Saari.
The film will be available for streaming on March 27, 2025, exclusively on Prime Video.
