As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that IO Interactive’s decision to remove Conor McGregor from Hitman is a step in the right direction. It sends a clear message that such heinous actions will not be tolerated, even within the virtual world we inhabit.
IO Interactive, the creators of the Hitman World of Assassination series, have announced they are terminating their collaboration with Conor McGregor. All content related to the well-known MMA athlete will be removed from the game following allegations that he violently assaulted a woman in 2018, which included charges of rape and battery.
Hitman removes McGregor
Last week in the Irish High Court, it was determined that Conor McGregor had committed an assault on his victim, Nikita Hand. As a result, Hand received £206,000 in damages; however, McGregor will not serve any jail time for this act of violence. The mixed martial artist has indicated intentions to appeal the verdict.
IO Interactive has taken to social media to share that, starting right away, all game content related to McGregor will be erased from all digital storefronts due to unspecified reasons. This MMA fighter was introduced as an Elusive Target named “The Disruptor” in the game last year. A DLC pack previously allowed players to own this content permanently.
Based on the recent court judgment involving Conor McGregor, IO Interactive has chosen to end their partnership with the athlete, effective straight away. This is a matter they regard highly and cannot overlook its significance. As a result, they will start eliminating all content related to Mr. McGregor from their stores starting today.
Before the ruling by the Irish High Court, the McGregor’s Hitman DLC was temporarily reintroduced into the game for a span of one month. Originally intended to stay until December 8, 2024, IO Interactive has now announced that they will be taking down this ongoing event from the World of Assassination.
Those who have purchased The Disruptor DLC seem capable of executing the assassination on the fallen MMA fighter, and they can still redownload their paid content. At present, it’s uncertain whether the developers intend to delete the content entirely or offer refunds should such a move be made.
Absolutely, McGregor continues to appear in other video games like those under the UFC label and hasn’t been excluded yet. In fact, he graced the cover of EA Sports UFC 3, which came out in 2020. Whether or not he will be omitted from future games remains uncertain.
