In the top-billed yet low-key film, Washington takes on the role of a music industry titan ensnared in a kidnap-for-ransom scheme. The star-studded movie features Ilfenesh Hadera, A$AP Rocky, Dean Winters, John Douglas Thompson, and Ice Spice.

The synopsis states: “When a renowned music magnate, often hailed as having ‘the best ears in the industry’ (portrayed by Denzel Washington), finds himself ensnared in a dangerous extortion scheme, he is faced with a critical moral predicament that could cost him his life.” Furthermore, “Denzel Washington and Spike Lee, long-time collaborators, join forces for the 5th time to reimagine the masterful crime thriller of Akira Kurosawa, ‘High and Low,’ which unfolds in the gritty streets of contemporary New York City.

The screenplay is penned by William Alan Fox. Both the films “Highest 2 Lowest” and “High and Low,” to some extent, draw inspiration from a 1959 novel called “King’s Ransom,” originally written by Ed McBain.

Previously, Spike Lee and Denzel Washington have joined forces in films such as Mo’ Better Blues (1990), Malcolm X (1992) where Washington received an Academy Award nomination, He Got Game (1998), Inside Man (2006). More recently, they worked together when Lee directed John David Washington, Denzel Washington’s son, in the 2018 movie BlacKkKlansman.

The movie titled “Highest 2 Lowest” is set to make its debut at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival this month. It’s scheduled to hit U.S. cinemas on August 22, 2025, and will be distributed by A24 before it becomes available for streaming on Apple TV+ starting September 5, 2025.
