After the big debut of the movie at the Cannes Film Festival, I’ve been seeing a lot of reviews coming in. Some are absolutely raving about Spike Lee’s adaptation featuring Denzel Washington and ASAP Rocky, while others seem to be more on the lower end of the spectrum. The highest praises and lowest critiques are rolling in, but the buzz around this film is definitely heating up!
What are the Highest 2 Lowest reviews saying?
Critics’ reviews for the new movie based on Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low have started flooding into Rotten Tomatoes. Although the film hasn’t received an official rating just yet, many critics are showering it with compliments.
According to Geoffrey Macnab from The Independent, this film is a captivating crime-thriller, yet it fails to reach the high expectations set by their past collaborative projects between Lee and Washington. Regardless, it’s an enjoyable experience overall.
In simple terms, The Guardian’s critic, Peter Bradshaw, commended the film for its vibrancy and spirit. Meanwhile, Variety’s Peter Debruge noted that the renowned director elevated the movie to unprecedented levels, crafting a genre film that both entertains and raises concerns about potential cultural developments.
According to Steve Pond from TheWrap, both leads received high praise. He described Washington as a “timeless powerhouse,” while ASAP Rocky was hailed as an exciting new talent, shining brightly in the film.
In the synopsis, it is stated that when a renowned music magnate (Denzel Washington), often hailed as having the “sharpest ears in the industry,” finds himself under threat from a ransom scheme, he faces a challenging moral predicament, with life or death at stake. Additionally, Denzel Washington and Spike Lee join forces for their fifth collaboration, retelling the acclaimed crime thriller of Akira Kurosawa, “High and Low,” on the gritty streets of contemporary New York City.
The script originates from William Alan Fox. The movies, Highest 2 Lowest and Kurosawa’s High and Low, were inspired, to some extent, by the 1959 novel King’s Ransom penned by Ed McBain.
In the past, Lee and Washington have teamed up for movies such as Mo’ Better Blues (from 1990), Malcolm X in 1992 (which landed Washington a nomination for an Academy Award), He Got Game in 1998, and Inside Man in 2006. More recently, Lee has been working with John David Washington, Washington’s son, on the film BlacKkKlansman which was released in 2018.
2025’s Highest, Lowest is set to make its debut at the Cannes Film Festival this month. In U.S. theaters, it will hit screens on August 22, 2025, distributed by A24. After a brief run in theaters, it will become available for streaming on Apple TV+ starting September 5, 2025.
