Hideo Kojima was credited in Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater's TGS 2024 demo opening

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can attest to the significance of Hideo Kojima’s recognition in Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. Having been a witness to the tumultuous departure of this industry titan from Konami back in 2015, it was heartening to see that his contributions were duly acknowledged in the opening credits of this remake.

In the opening credits of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Hideo Kojima, the original director of the Metal Gear series who left Konami in 2015 following a disagreement, was given proper recognition. Now, Kojima leads Kojima Productions and is developing the Death Stranding series. Meanwhile, Konami is working on a remake of Snake Eater and publishing Silent Hill 2 by Bloober Team. It appears that in acknowledging Kojima’s contributions to Snake Eater, Konami paid tribute to him early on.

At Tokyo Game Show 2024, I had the opportunity to take part in a play session for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. For more insights into my thoughts about the game, feel free to check out the Tokyo Game Show 2024 Metal Gear Solid Delta preview. You’ll also find a run of the demo there. It should be noted that the demo begins when Snake lands; this is because we watched the opening cinematic in a separate theater prior to the session. The line, “Based on original story by Hideo Kojima,” was shown during this opening cinematic.

While it might simply seem right and reasonable for this to be the case, it’s not always so, especially in the game industry. There have been stories of developers being uncredited on projects big and small, notably including language localizers and/or QA testers. Striking Distance’s The Callisto Protocol is a hefty recent example of a game with allegations of developers being left out in the end credits, but issues also go back further such as in that of 2011’s LA Noire where hundreds of developers were said to have been left out of the in-game credits. Rockstar later addressed them on its website.

After parting ways with Konami in 2015 under somewhat contentious circumstances, Kojima established his own studio, Kojima Productions. This independent company went on to create the game Death Stranding. However, the current status of their relationship remains unclear, as neither party has spoken about it for quite some time.

As Metal Gear Solid’s sequel, Delta, takes a new course, it’s reassuring to see one of the original game’s key creators recognized. The release date for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater hasn’t been confirmed yet, but the remake developers and Konami have done a commendable job in staying faithful to its roots.
