Hideo Kojima nabs “full ownership” of Death Stranding IP from Sony, so expect more Xbox ports

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming history under my belt, I must say that the news about Hideo Kojima owning Death Stranding feels like a breath of fresh air. For years, we’ve been witnessing the evolution of this mastermind’s mind-bending narratives and innovative gameplay mechanics, from Metal Gear Solid to Death Stranding.

After gaining complete control over Death Stranding, its creator Hideo Kojima now has full authority to shape the franchise’s future as he sees fit. Following an unexpected release on Xbox for the Series X and Series S consoles, Sony Interactive Entertainment no longer holds any rights to the Death Stranding intellectual property (IP).

Kojima owns Death Stranding

According to a recent statement by Kojima Productions, they now have full control over Death Stranding. Although Death Stranding 2: On the Beach will initially be available exclusively on the PlayStation 5 for a limited period, this suggests that an Xbox version of the game could become accessible in the future.

Kojima Productions intends to expand the franchise to a wider range of platforms and audiences than ever, having previously been playable on PS4, PS5, PC, MacOS, and iOS (iPhone). Today, it was also introduced on Amazon Luna.

To celebrate the game reaching its 5th year, Kojima now has control over the video game series, allowing future projects such as the A24 movie to be developed independently of any PlayStation involvement.

Kojima’s future

Apart from the ongoing development of Death Stranding, which includes a forthcoming film and sequel, Hideo Kojima’s studio is additionally engaged in various other projects as well.

In simpler terms, the gaming company is currently developing a horror game called OD, which will be exclusive to Xbox and features Sophia Lillis, known for her roles in IT and Dungeons & Dragons. Additionally, they are also working on an early-stage project called Physint, a stealth-action game that could be considered the spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid.
