Hideki Kamiya teases that he’d work on Scalebound again given the chance

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but reflect on the captivating tale of Scalebound – a game that, despite its unfortunate cancellation, continues to cast a spell over many in the gaming community. A glimmer of optimism persists in the corners of the internet, and it seems that hope is shared by none other than Hideki Kamiya himself. Intriguingly, he’s been pondering on the intricate details developed for Scalebound, hinting at a desire to revisit this enchanting project one day.

Kamiya’s ongoing enthusiasm for the game was expressed through a social media exchange between him and his studio, Clovers Inc. The studio posted a video on their platform featuring employees gathered around Kamiya’s desk, seemingly reviewing old YouTube clips of the game and discussing its creation. During this interaction, Hideki Kamiya elaborated that the game resembled an Isekai tale (a narrative type popular in Japanese games and media where a character is transported to a foreign world), which were particularly popular during Scalebound’s development phase.

“I’d love to make it again someday,” Kamiya added, as quoted by Clovers Inc.

However, Kamiya also confirmed his own interest, calling out Xbox lead Phil Spencer on the matter.

Let’s do it, Phil ! 😀

Hideki Kamiya encouraged, “Let’s make it happen, Phil!,” in a quote-tweet on top of the original Clovers Inc. video, clearly alluding to Phil Spencer at Xbox, who remains the holder of the rights to the Scalebound IP.

According to what Phil Spencer said about it recently, he seems rather pessimistic about the possibility of Scalebound getting rebooted. Yet, Kamiya has expressed interest in collaborating with Xbox on multiple occasions over the years, either through PlatinumGames or independently.

Currently, Scalebound remains an inactive intellectual property, but optimism lingers since continued interest could potentially bring it back. Meanwhile, keep an eye out for future developments from Clover Studios regarding their upcoming games, including possible updates on the next Okami title and other exciting announcements.
