Here’s Why ESPN’s Woj Retired & Walked Away From $35 Million Contract

As a sports enthusiast who has grown accustomed to Woj‘s “Woj bombs” and his insightful analysis during NBA drafts, I found the news of his retirement from ESPN rather unexpected, yet heartwarming. It seems that after seven years with the network, Adrian Wojnarowski has chosen to pursue a more personally meaningful path, stepping away from the glitz and glamour of sports journalism for a role at his alma mater, St. Bonaventure University.

In an unexpected turn of events, ESPN analyst Adrian Wojnarowski, commonly known as Woj, stunned everyone by announcing his decision to step away from the network, relinquishing a substantial $35 million contract. The well-respected 55-year-old insider, renowned for sharing “Woj bombs” on social media during NBA drafts with exclusive trade insights, disclosed in a post on X (previously Twitter) on September 18 that he was leaving his high-paying position at ESPN to take up a new role at his alma mater, St. Bonaventure University. Here’s the reason behind his departure from the network and the news industry.

Adrian Wojnarowski’s retirement from ESPN explained

Woj has opted to leave ESPN, choosing instead to pursue activities that hold deeper personal significance for him.

According to what he penned on X, he acknowledges that his motivation to remain an ESPN analyst has waned. He expresses that time is not unlimited and, although he appreciates the network for providing him with his dream job for seven years, he felt compelled to bring about a significant “life shift”.

According to ESPN, Woj has taken on the job as General Manager (GM) at St. Bonaventure University, where he earned his degree in 1991. In this new position, Woj will handle name, image, and likeness matters, as well as aiding Coach Mark Schmidt with recruitment efforts.

He’s had a very open association with the university, as he not only promised $50,000 to the university’s Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) group, Team Unfurl, in 2024, but also agreed to match any donations garnered by the group from sponsorships, up until the end of the season.

According to Andrew Marchand from the New York Post, Woj is forfeiting approximately $20 million from his $35 million contract with ESPN, signed in 2022. This contract stipulated an annual salary of $7 million, and he still had three years remaining on it.

As for me, I can confirm that my superiors, Jimmy Pitaro and Burke Magnus, were taken aback by my unexpected departure. But hey, who else would pull off a “Woj bomb” style exit if not the one and only?

Contrary to speculation, Shannon Sharpe remains employed by ESPN following the recent events on his Instagram Live. It’s important to note that Samantha Ponder was let go in September, and Robert Griffin III was terminated in August, but these incidents do not involve Shannon Sharpe.
